A recent study in Nature Magazine highlights significant risks tied to even temporary increases in global temperatures above 1.5°C. Each 0.1°C of overshoot significantly raises the probability of crossing critical tipping points in Earth's systems, such as the potential collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet or a shutdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. With global temperatures already rising by 1.3°C, the study warns that exceeding 2°C could drastically accelerate these risks, leading to irreversible consequences. Key takeaways:  • Short-term temperature overshoots above 1.5°C can trigger irreversible climate tipping points, threatening long-term stability.  • The longer and higher the overshoot, the greater the potential for catastrophic outcomes.  • Immediate, substantial emission reductions are crucial. Relying on future carbon removal technologies is a high-stakes gamble that may not prevent tipping points.  • Current climate policies could result in a 3.3°C rise by the century's end, with a 45% chance of crossing these critical tipping points.
