Hello Placemakers! We hope you've had some well-deserved rest! Now it’s time to reflect on the fantastic week we just had. Thank you all for bringing your incredible energy and making this experience one to remember. We look back on four days filled with creative workshops, insightful presentations, honest conversations, and plenty of fun. Help us #capture the impact of #PlacemakingWeekEurope2024 by #sharing your most memorable moments and impactful sessions in the #comments. Together, we’ll create a lasting #testimony of this extraordinary week. A huge thank you to everyone for shaping, attending, and contributing to Placemaking Week Europe 2024. Special recognition goes to the City of Rotterdam, our participants, speakers, venue partners, staff, and the entire Placemaking Europe team for their dedication and commitment. This year, we reached new heights with 715 participants from 80 countries, 250 speakers leading 170 sessions across 23 venues in Gemeente Rotterdam. It was a week of meaningful discussions, hands-on workshops, and collaboration as placemakers from around the world came together to tackle key urban challenges. Many of you even explored the city on 100 bikes—thank you for being active and adventurous! On that note, we’re thrilled to announce that Placemaking Week Europe 2025 will take place in Reggio Emilia, Italy, from September 23-26, 2025! Reggio Emilia has been chosen for its innovative approach to urban challenges like sustainable renewal and community engagement. The city sets a high standard for citizen-centered decision-making. The festival will be held at Parco Innovazione, in the former Officine Meccaniche Reggiane, with additional venues including Laboratorio Aperto, Polveriera, and Centro Internazionale Malaguzzi. Looking forward to another inspiring edition of #PlacemakingWeek in 2025!

Hello Placemakers, Yesterday, we kicked off our first day of our Placemaking Week Europe 2024 with the InclusiveCity and Cities in Placemaking programs, and we couldn’t be happier with the turnout! We welcomed our diverse and inspiring representatives from various European cities, including Rome, Rotterdam, Budapest, Vienna, Cork, Helsinki, Helsingborg, Reggio Emilia, Trenčín, and many more. During the InclusiveCity workshop we explored how placemaking serves as a powerful tool for empowerment, inclusion, and building trust within communities. In the evening, we celebrated our Opening Party at OASE, where board members Laska Nenova and Levente Polyak set the tone with their remarks on the importance of #collaboration in #placemaking. The session began in the beautiful venue with an introductory speech by Rotterdam placemaker Maurice Specht, followed by a formal welcome from Vice-Mayor Chantal Zeegers and venue representative Berend van Zanten. We also introduced our keynote speakers for the week and shared essential information about the upcoming events. We are excited to welcome everyone to the official first day of Placemaking Week Europe 2024 – Rotterdam (6th Edition) today! See you around!

Hello Placemakers, it is time to keep you updated about our our final plenary speakers: Charles Landry, Francine Houben and Carlos Moreno, each bringing their unique perspective to our big festival on September 24-27. Our entire team looks forward to seeing you all in #Rotterdam! Speaker 1: We are excited to have Charles Landry back at #PlacemakingWeekEurope! Known for introducing the #CreativeCity concept in the late 1980s, Charles has been a key figure in urban transformation. His work focuses on how cities can foster creativity to address challenges and unlock potential. This idea has since evolved into a global movement, revolutionizing how Cities view their potential and resources. He’s also the mind behind the Creative Bureaucracy movement, highlighting the role of public servants as drivers of change. Speaker 2: Francine Houben, founding partner of Mecanoo, has led the firm from Dutch success to global recognition since 1984 with innovative, sustainable designs addressing major challenges. Her work spans architecture, urban planning, and landscape design, guided by her principles of People, Place, Purpose, and Poetry. Houben has taught at top institutions like Delft University of Technology, Harvard University, and Yale University, and curated the First International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (2003), spotlighting the aesthetics of mobility. Her many honors include Woman Architect of the Year, the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Prize, and being named a Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion in 2024. Speaker 3: Carlos Moreno champions the idea of multifunctional, multipolar cities where essential services are within a 10-15 minute walk or bike ride. By rethinking urban planning with a focus on proximity, he aims to create more sustainable cities that reduce travel and foster better urban living, all in the fight against climate change. An Associate Professor at Paris IAE – Panthéon Sorbonne Universités, Moreno is known for pioneering „The 15-Minute City“ concept and has won the Obel Award for his work. He also co-founded the etilab and launched the Global Proximity Observatory with partners like UN-Habitat and C40 Cities.
