Yesterday was the 16th Annual Sustainable Reading Day of NME De Klyster. For this year's edition they had our book 'Back to the Plastic Age' translated into Frysian! Titled: 'Dit wie de plestik tiid' Our founder Maria Westerbos travelled to their office to present the book to Mayor Johannes Gerrit Kramer of the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân and mayor Klaas Agricola of the municipality Dantumadiel. After which they visited primary schools to read the book to the students. Over 500 books have been distributed in the area. Thank you Wietske Poelman, Eline van den Nieuwenhof & Marjolein Staal for making this happen. We are honoured to have been a part of this day! Photos by: Koos Scherjon

Newsflash! We are very happy to announce our renewed partnership with Princess Traveller, who also brought sister companies Koqi and The Bourgini Company into the PSF Business Community this year! All three companies see similarities in their missions to reduce plastic pollution and through our partnerships we believe we can achieve great system change. PSF’s mission is to stop plastic pollution at its source, for the health of our planet, its ecosystems and animal and human health. We do this by raising awareness through advocacy, campaigning, advancing scientific research and promoting creative solutions. One of the ways to achieve this is our business community program, in which we act as experts to foster thoughtful leadership and system change through direct consultation, but also through events where our partners can educate and inspire each other! The business community brings together a wide array of business: some are already well on their way to reduce their plastic footprint, others are taking their very first steps. Together, as a community, we believe we can excel. Princess Traveller’s mission is to become the world’s most sustainable and green suitcase brand. With their I AM GREEN suitcase they have made amazing strides to achieve this mission. The suitcase is made almost entirely with recycled materials. Bourgini has formulated the same sustainable ambitions and, together with PSF, have developed a sustainable product line which avoids microplastics entering your food & water! KOQI started on this same path by developing a line of pots and pans which focus is to reduce the plastic footprint and too cook safe without (chemical) additives entering your food! Big thanks to Tim Ouborg & Florentine Ouborg Patrick Kuijt Stijn van Helvoort Ilona Groenewegen for taking our partnership to the next level, together we can make big steps in system change!

Plastic Soup Foundation is looking to move office, but we need some help finding a new space. Do you have the lead we need? We are looking for a space of 100 to 150 m2, or something that can host 10 to 15 workspaces. It is essential that this place is well connected to public transportation. We don't mind sharing kitchens or meeting rooms with other businesses, but we would love for our neighbours to be other NGOs or creative businesses. Sleek office buildings on the Zuid As don’t really fit with our ideology so we are looking for something a bit more rustic and creative. Do you know of something? Can you help us? Please let us know at info@plasticsoupfoundation.org or feel free to share this post with your network! #office #officespace #officeinspiration #officedecor #kantoor #kantoorruimte #amsterdam #huren #huur #verhuizing #goeddoel #ngo

Fashion's plastic paralysis exposed 🔎 Our latest report, Fashion's Plastic Paralysis, shows that big fashion brands are dodging responsibility for microplastics despite the environmental and health risks. Instead of tackling the root cause, they’re doubling down on synthetic fibres and investing in false solutions to cover up the crisis. 👕 Zara,SHEIN, boohoo, and lululemon are the worst offenders for expanding their use of polluting fossil-fuel fabrics, but it's not just fast fashion – luxury retailers like Kering (Gucci) and LVMH (Louis Vuitton) are increasing their synthetic product ranges, too. The findings are clear: we need strong laws to combat fast fashion’s synthetic addiction, and fashion brands must end their addiction to toxic plastic. 📹📩 SHARE this video so everyone can know - fashion brands must end their addiction to toxic plastic. ⚠️ Breaking: microplastic found in human brains ⚠️ Recent groundbreaking research led by Professor Dr. Thais Mauad and Dr. Luis F Amato-Lourenco from the University of Sao Paulo, supported by the Plastic Soup Foundation, reveals that microplastics can enter our brain directly through the nose. Previously considered a safe route, this is now proven otherwise, which is deeply alarming. Read more about the research here: https://bit.ly/4eu57Cl Even smaller nanoplastics, which are 1000 times tinier, are also able to penetrate our brain. These particles, originating from clothing, packaging, and other everyday items, can infiltrate cells. The dangerous effects of plastic on our health are becoming increasingly clear. Plastic cannot enter the body without consequences, with links to infertility, cancer, cognitive disorders, and autoimmune diseases. These new insights are a real wake-up call. The study was assigned to Professor Mauad by the Plastic Soup Foundation as a part of the Plastic Health Council ’s efforts to facilitate research on microplastics and health. The Plastic Health Council is a group of leading scientists and campaigners, fighting to ensure a UN Global Plastics Treaty that addresses the impact of plastic on human health. The next instalment in Busan, Korea is fast approaching. Maria Westerbos, founder Plastic Soup Foundation & co-founder Plastic Health Council: “Scientists reveal time and again the dangerous effects of plastics on human health, but this absolutely takes the crown. There can no longer be any doubt. The international community is only a few months away from the final negotiations on the global plastics treaty and yet too many policymakers are still pandering to the petrochemical giants. The international community cannot waste any more time; it must finally listen to the science, once and for all.” Professor Mauad will join us at upcoming negotiations (UNEP INC5) to present her findings and convince international negotiators to draft a strong treaty to combat micro and nanoplastic pollution. #plastic #plasticpollution #research #microplastics #nanoplastics #brains #health

New research by the Minderoo Foundation and the University of Adelaide provides irrefutable evidence that plastic chemicals are harmful to human health throughout the human life cycle, from pre-birth to old age. Not one of the plastic chemicals they studied is safe. However, the 5 classes of chemicals they researched (BPA, phthalates, PCB, PBDEs, and PFAS) are only a fraction of the thousands added to plastic. Most of these chemicals have not been adequately or even ever studied for effects on human health. The Minderoo Foundation therefore advocates taking precautionary measures. This study once again proves that we need a strong and comprehensive #GlobalPlasticTreaty. The fifth round of the UN negotiations will take place in three months’ time in Busan, South Korea. We, like the Minderoo Foundation, hope that this research will influence the negotiations. As our founder, Maria Westerbos, says: ”[the conversation] is no longer about ocean pollution, but about putting our own and our children’s health at risk”. What to do on a business trip to London? Try alternatives to plastic of course! When Maria Westerbos and Jeroen Dagevos travelled to the Future of Fabrics expo last month, they had the pleasure to meet the people of Notpla who have developed food packaging that is not only: not plastic (notpla), but also edible! In this video Jeroen is trying their OHOO, which is their nature inspired, plastic free alternative to single-use plastic packaging. The liquid inside the OHOO is encapsulated in a thin, flexible layer that is 100% naturally biodegradable and entirely edible. This is a completely zero waste packaging alternative that we are very excited about. Thanks for having us Notpla, we can't wait to see what the future holds for you!

If we don’t do something the plastic will be the end of us… That is the message that filmmakers Stuart Hackshaw and Alistair Little wanted to convey in their short film PLASTIC. They made PLASTIC with the goal of creating something out of the ordinary, that was eye catching and had impact, leaving the audience with a strong message. They kindly donated this film to us in 2022 and since then it has received lots of credit from viewers as well as a nomination from the Smiley Charity Film Awards. Since the weather this #PlasticFreeJuly is matching the gloomy atmosphere of the short video, and the message is even more relevant today, we thought it was a great moment to showcase PLASTIC again, together with our gratitude to Stuart and Allistair. We are very glad to see that 70 international financial institutions are calling on petrochemical companies to transition to safe and environmentally sound practices, by reducing fossil fuel dependency and eliminating hazardous chemicals in plastics. We know that the plastic (health) crisis can only be stopped at the source. So holding the plastic producers accountable is essential. The Investor Statement demands that the producers of plastic stop stalling progress in the Global Plastic Treaty and instead present strategies and solutions for the plastic waste they produce and the harmful chemicals they put in this plastic. We fully support these demands and this great initiative! Great job Planet Tracker, Achmea, Arthur van Mansvelt. Together we can achieve the system change needed to close the plastic tap!
