Recent onderzoek toont aan dat het verwarmen van plastic verpakkingen, zoals magnetronmaaltijden of babyflesjes, leidt tot een explosieve toename van microplastics en schadelijke chemicaliën in ons voedsel. · Zo kan het aantal microplasticdeeltjes in een liter water oplopen van 600.000 bij kamertemperatuur naar 550 miljoen bij 95°C. · Eén vierkante centimeter verpakking kan tot 4,2 miljoen deeltjes lekken – ongeacht hoe kort je iets opwarmt. Deze deeltjes komen terecht in ons verteringsstelsel, verstoren het microbioom en dragen bij aan gezondheidsproblemen zoals hartfalen. In de fictieve serie Breaking Bad is het mixen van chemicaliën illegaal. Maar in onze echte voedselketen gebeurt het dagelijks; zonder regulering vooraf. Brits unknowingly chew 4 BILLION pieces of plastic gum every year, endangering human health and the environment. Every piece contains a drinking straw of plastic hidden within the ingredients. Plastic straws and vapes are banned, so we're calling on the UK Government to ban the manufacture and sale of plastic chewing gum for the good of public health and our planet. Leadership transition at Plastic Soup Foundation! After 14 years, our founder Maria Westerbos is passing the baton to Robbert Meulenveld, our new director. However, Maria will remain actively involved as Chief Changemaker, continuing to support us strategically in the fight against plastic pollution. Under Maria’s leadership, we have grown into a global frontrunner, launching impactful campaigns such as Beat the Microbead, which contributed to the EU ban on microplastics.
