18th of March - Global Recycling Day Every year, over 2 billion tons of waste are generated globally, and that figure is anticipated to reach 3.40 billion in about 30 years (a 70% increase). While recycling plays a crucial role in reducing waste, it is not the ultimate solution —it’s just a step in the transition toward a truly circular economy. In fact, recycling is the last step in fixing old linear system. Just like gold, materials have intrinsic value. Every piece of aluminium, steel, glass, or wood carries an energy and material cost that should not be lost. The problem? Most industries treat materials as disposable rather than as assets. We believe, the best recyclers of the future are not waste management companies but producers themselves. It is not just about waste — it’s about preserving value.

🐦 Tij—an egg-shaped bird observatory designed by RAU & RO&AD Architecten —was built in the Haringvliet area, Netherlands, to allow people to experience the ecological impact of the sluice openings. Thatched with local reed, it features a fully File-to-Factory-produced timber structure, composed of 402 prefabricated parts assembled on-site. Good news in the New Year! We won German Design Award by Rat für Formgebung - German Design Council with our project De Groene Afslag! Here is a jury report: “For the structural transformation of a listed former military school into a place that combines office buildings, living, hotel and culture, the materials and products used were transferred to a new context according to the Kintsugi principle. As RAU enters its 33rd year of business, here's the story of how the architectural practice evolved and where it is going. Founder Thomas Rau talks to Will Coldwell (The Economist, FT Mag, Wired) on his wake-up call(s), and how education can help in the mind change shift we so urgently need. Systemic change, where reuse is the norm, according to Thomas, hinges on the willingness of individuals to change. Therefore, world history gives him hope. ‘All major changes were basically brought about by one person. Of those, we currently have 8 billion people on this earth.
