We've concluded this year’s IE School of Architecture and Design x UNStudio Amsterdam Lab, part of the Master in Architecture program. Over the past three weeks, students immersed themselves in Amsterdam, exploring how, where, and why we work, while gaining insights into city-making innovations in the Netherlands. The final day brought together an inspiring group of minds, including Thesis Chair and our founder and principal architect Ben van Berkel, alongside our colleagues Dana Behrman and Mónica Palfy Alonso-Alegre, and IE School of Architecture and Design professors Marcela Aragüez, Fernando Pino, and Enrique Jerez Abajo. Together, we delved into the students’ projects, sparking discussions on the future of work and its impact on urban environments. We’re excited to see how these ideas evolve in the coming months and continue to shape the conversation around the future of work and urban design. Thank you everyone who joined - and David Goodman for the great photos!

We’re ecstatic to announce that our design 18T Mansion in Chongqing, China, has been realised! This new development not only rejuvenates the Shibati area on the Yuzhong peninsula - where the facilities were no longer meeting modern needs - to achieve high-quality livability, but also preserves the heritage of the ‘Urban Well’ by integrating it into the design of the residential towers and podiums. Our design proposal for Hannamdong-4 Residences enhances both individual well-being and community connectivity by drawing inspiration from the distinct characteristics of the locality. This holistic approach prioritises well-being and sustainability, creating an environment where the city and nature coexist in harmony. Central to the design is the ‘Biophilic Nexus’ which not only reconnect the mountain to the river but also bridges users to the city’s past, drawing from elements that symbolise local heritage. Our proposal for the redevelopment of the Sewoon District in the historic heart of Seoul envisions a transformation of the area to honor its cultural, historical and commercial legacy, but also propel the area towards a sustainable future. To shape Seoul’s skyline with cultural and historical elegance, we designed the massing of the five towers to reflect the silhouette of the iconic Bukhansan Mountain which forms the natural background. The lower levels of the towers are designed to foster an open, public environment, with wide spaces between buildings providing visual and spatial flexibility. Passive design principles are incorporated throughout the project to reduce energy loads, increase biodiversity and enhance well-being and quality of life. The design was carried out in collaboration with DA Group Urban Design & Architect in Seoul, with Atelier LOOS van VLIET and Field Operations as advisors for landscape design. We hope you all are enjoying the holiday season! Whether you’re staying at home or jet-setting off to someplace warm, we all know how important hospitality is for all of us. Earlier last year, we took to the streets of Amsterdam to ask some of you questions about the future of this sector! From thinking sustainably to flying off to the moon, we asked a few of our colleagues to analyse your answers. They gave us some valuable insights to explore how we are thinking about designing for hospitality at UNStudio. At UNStudio, we know that great design isn’t just about buildings—it’s about people, ideas, and those little sparks of inspiration that can come from anywhere (yes, even your favorite coffee shop or that random doodle on a napkin). 2024 has been a year of bold ideas, big collaborations, and creating spaces that bring people together, spark creativity, and make the world just a little bit better for everyone (and the planet too!). To our amazing clients, partners, and communities—thank you for dreaming big with us and making it all possible. You inspire us every day. Here’s to a holiday season filled with joy, connection, and maybe even a few unexpected ideas for the year ahead. Let’s keep building a brighter, more sustainable future together! #happyholidays #2025 #designforeveryone
