As we approach the final stretch of the U.S. elections, it’s time to shift focus from the constant cycle of polls and political personalities to what really matters: solutions. Horse race journalism, while exciting, often neglects deeper societal issues. Constructive journalism, on the other hand, digs into the complexities and asks the important questions. What are the stakes? How can we foster better debate and understanding? 🧐 Read more about this: https://bit.ly/3Nh0FeH

At the b° future festival in Bonn, Germany, the spotlight was on constructive journalism last weekend. Our editor, Stefan ten Teije, was there and had his understanding reaffirmed on how crucial it is to map out audience expectations more accurately. According to many of the speakers, constructive journalism is a pressing necessity to strengthen the connection with audiences, particularly as more young people are no longer turning to traditional media for information. The urgency to address this was palpable. Constructive journalism in practice delves into grey areas and nuances, uncovers problems, and fosters debate. In the view of German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, the aim is to help people grasp complex issues and see potential paths for change, Manuela Kasper-Claridge told the professionals in attendance. But how can this be achieved? According to Tina Rosenberg of the Solutions Journalism Network, every editorial meeting needs someone to ask: "Is there a solutions angle possible in this story?" This inevitably requires a shift in approach. As Peter Damgaard Kristensen pointed out in a citation: "You can't change what you don't measure." He demonstrated how a tool powered by artificial intelligence can identify and evaluate constructive articles. Furthermore, he showed that media outlets serious about adopting this approach see a tangible increase in engagement with their articles. This was also the message smartocto brought to the festival: if you want to understand what your audience desires and expects from you, you need to map it out and track changes using the best data tool available (which is indeed our own tool, sorry not sorry). Thanks to smartocto.ai, the system can suggest improvements to a text, aiming to deliver insights such as: 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀, '𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗲' 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 '𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲' 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀.
