Over ons

SOMO investigates multinationals. Independent, factual, and critical, we have a clear goal – a fair and sustainable world in which public interests outweigh corporate interests. The outsized and harmful power of multinational companies and the structures that enable them to stand in the way. A shift in power balance is urgently needed. To address this, SOMO investigates multinationals: we expose their impact, their structures, and the systems they operate in. We develop alternatives and carry out advocacy work. We deliver the knowledge that fuels far-reaching change. We do that as part of a civil society movement in deep collaborations and alliances with partners all over the world, always seeing our role as part of an ecosystem of stakeholders.

🚨 BREAKING 🚨 We are suing the Dutch state for failing to prevent genocide in Gaza and uphold international law. Today, a coalition of Palestinian and Dutch civil society organisations filed a complaint in The Hague against the Dutch government. Our message is clear: ⚠️ 𝐋𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐜𝐮𝐭 𝐃𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞! ⚠️ Despite numerous international warnings and rulings, the Dutch government has failed to act. With no signs of change and even closer ties to Israel under the new government, we've decided to take the Dutch state to court. ✊ “Dutch investors, supermarkets, suppliers of military products, and other actors have been enabling the occupation and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians for decades. The Netherlands, host of the ICC and ICJ, must adhere to its obligations under international law and take measures for accountability now”, said SOMO’s researcher Lydia de Leeuw. ▶ Swipe through to learn more about our demands on the Dutch court ⬇ ▶ Learn more about the case here: https://lnkd.in/ei-ATkdg ▶ Major cases like these come with hefty expenses. Do companies that offset their emissions really decarbonise faster? 🤔 That's what several reports produced by carbon offset proponents claim… So, our research team looked at the data from three of the most “quoted” reports. We found that these reports: 📈 Are mostly based on limited, self-reported or unverified corporate data 🏭 Don’t tell *how* companies have reduced their GHG emissions ❓Use questionable methodologies 💸 Are compiled by entities owned or representing commercial interests in this same industry Find out more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e5a569dW #CarbonOffsets #CarbonOffsetting #CarbonCredits #CarbonMarket #VCM #NetZero #NetZeroPledges #GHGemissions #CarbonClaims #Greenwashing

1️⃣ in 5️⃣ participants of the public DMA workshops had close ties with Big Tech companies. Hardly any of them disclosed these affiliations. The workshops were intended to provide a platform for communities affected by Big Tech, like users, competitors, and businesses dependent on their services. Our research with Corporate Europe Observatory and LobbyControl shows that 21% of the attendees were affiliated with Big Tech companies without disclosing it. These include representatives from: ▶️ 34 law firms, ▶️ 22 lobby firms, ▶️ 17 trade associations, ▶️ 10 economic consultancies, and ▶️ 8 think tanks Some of the participants were Big Tech front groups, which tried to skew the debate in Big Tech’s favour without ever acknowledging those very same companies directly funded them. 🤔 To prevent future workshops from being similarly distorted, all participants must disclose any conflict of interest, not only at registration but also when speaking at the workshops.
Organisations that clearly function as Big Tech front groups should be denied access to in-person participation.
The European Commission will need more people and resources to counter Big Tech’s:
💸 deep pockets and ⛓️💥 extensive lobby networks
 The next DMA workshop will be on 25 November, with Booking.com 👀. Learn more about our research ➡️ https://somo.nu/40ijIgd #DigitalMarketsAct #BigTech #MonopolyPower #Bookingcom #Apple #Alphabet #Meta #Amazon #Microsoft #ByteDance

📽️ Picture this: Another company takes over the factory where you work. You’re told to sign a new contract—an “intra-company transfer”—with no compensation if you refuse. Like most workers, you sign. But some resist, sensing something’s off. Soon after, those who resisted win compensation. Not fair, right? 👎 This happened to hundreds of workers at a major iPhone factory in Shanghai, who went on strike after being misled into signing contracts. ❌ Cases like this one are common and show how, despite companies’ commitments and elaborate policies, workers’ rights are often overlooked in global supply chains. Apple, in this case, should have ensured proper due diligence to prevent such abuses in its supply chain. Workers deserve the assurance that their rights will be protected– especially by large companies like Apple, which are so well-positioned to do so. 👉 Kijk hier hoe je onze rechtszaak kunt steunen: https://lnkd.in/ejmgAA9G 👉 Lees hier meer over de zaak: https://lnkd.in/ei-ATkdg 👉 Lees de volledige adviesbrief van de AIV: https://bit.ly/48i8Fpb _____ EN | 🚨Advisory Council: Dutch policy is not in line with international law The Advisory Council on International Affairs (AIV for its initials in Dutch), which advises the government and parliament on foreign policy, strongly criticises Dutch policy towards Israel/Palestine and supports many aspects of our case against the Dutch state. According to the Advisory Council, the Netherlands should: ▶ Stop economic and other cooperation with Israel's illegal settlements; ▶ Exclude European companies and investors that contribute to settlement policy from specific tendering procedures; ▶ Review military cooperation with Israel; ▶ Revoke arms export licences for Israel when there is a risk of violations; ▶ Be prepared to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement as long as violations continue. Dutch policies must and can change❗ In the case filed against the state, along with Palestinian and Dutch groups, we call for measures such as an arms embargo and a ban on trade with the settlements. ⚖️ The hearing is on November 22 in The Hague. 👉 Support our lawsuit: https://lnkd.in/ejmgAA9G 👉 Learn more about the case: https://lnkd.in/ei-ATkdg 👉 Read the full advisory letter: https://bit.ly/48i8Fpb European Legal Support Center‎Al-Haq Organisation | مؤسسة الحق‎ Organisation | مؤسسة الحق‎ Al Mezan Center for Human Rights Stichting Palestina #Gaza #Israel #Palestina

"Don’t critique carbon offsets! They are vital to address the climate crisis and deforestation" Are they, though? 🧐 Let's unpack a few arguments: "Without carbon markets, corporations would do nothing" 🔎Reality check: Government policy can push industries to act. Substantial corporate lobbying has pushed governments to consider voluntary action and market incentives as more efficient than regulation. Offsets are a significant part of this narrative. "Offsets are necessary for ‘hard-to-abate’ emissions" 🔎Reality check: Most companies resort to buying carbon credits before reducing actual emissions. There is no clear definition of a ‘hard-to-abate’ emission, and the concept is open to abuse. There is ample evidence that the current use of carbon credits isn’t linked to hard-to-abate emissions. "REDD+ offset projects help to prevent deforestation" 🔎Reality check: REDD+ does not target the real drivers of deforestation. REDD+ doesn’t address the main drivers of deforestation. Most projects focus on changing how forest-dependent communities use their forests, particularly their traditional agricultural practices, which they have framed as a threat to the carbon stored in the trees. Experts have repeatedly criticised this approach. "Offsets are essential to funding protection for forests" 🔎Reality check: Forests do much better under Indigenous stewardship than under state or private schemes. Indigenous Peoples and other forest-dependent communities are often made vulnerable by offset projects. Turning forests into a business opportunity doesn’t protect the trees or the people who depend on them; it simply makes them dependent on volatile economic interests. The flaws in carbon offsets can't be fixed.⛓️💥 Industry players say that new methodologies can fix existing issues. But, new methodologies cannot and do not address the core problems of the carbon offset market. It is just a way to buy more time and shift attention away from core issues. Here's why the idea that "the flaws can be fixed" is a myth: https://lnkd.in/eDn7H9tC #CarbonOffsets #CarbonOffsetting #NetZero #CarbonClaims #CarbonNeutral #CarbonCredits #GHGemissions
