Released this month by RMI (June 2024): Brilliant report with (86) great slides about the #CleanTech Revolution! Executive Summary: ✅ The energy system is being transformed by the exponential forces of #renewables, #electrification, and #efficiency. ✅ The orthodox view of slow change is wrong. New clean technologies beat old fossil commodities because clean technologies' costs fall over time on learning curves, they are universal, and they grow quickly. ✅ Exponential change has been remarkable in the past decade. Cleantech costs have fallen by up to 80 percent, while investment is up nearly tenfold and solar generation has risen twelvefold. Electricity has become the largest source of useful energy, and the deep force of efficiency has reduced energy demand by a fifth. ✅ Change is led by China. Half the growth in cleantech is from China, but exponential growth is also happening in the OECD and across the Global South as Asia electrifies. ✅ Red flags across the fossil fuel system. New fossil electricity capacity peaked in 2010, oil and gas capex in 2014, and internal combustion engine (ICE) car sales in 2017. Fossil demand peaked for industry in 2014, for buildings in 2018, most likely for electricity in 2023, and will shortly peak in transport. ✅ The drivers of growth are more powerful than the barriers. Falling cleantech costs, the energy security of eternal renewables, Chinese leadership, and a race to the top will continue to overwhelm a fragile fossil fuel system which wastes two-thirds of its primary energy and fails to pay for its externality costs. ✅ So exponential growth of cleantech will continue. By 2030, we will be installing 1,000 GW of solar a year and selling 6,000 GWh of batteries a year, making possible the COP goal of tripling renewable capacity. Electrification rates will double to 0.5% a year, and efficiency gains will increase to over 3% a year. ✅ The fossil fuel system faces inexorable decline. Renewables will drive fossil fuels out of electricity generation, electrification will push fossils out of final energy, and efficiency will reduce fossil waste. Some 75% of fossil fuel demand is exposed to rapidly growing cleantech alternatives, so stranded assets are inevitable. ✅ Wider implications of change. The goals of the Paris Agreement are feasible, and the Global South will continue to leapfrog to cleantech. ✅ This is the pivot decade. When cleantech costs become irresistible, the renewable capacity is built, fossil fuel demand reaches the end of its plateau, and the transition is priced into markets. ✅ Now is the time to act. We need to build out renewables and electrify energy use, make good bets on small modular technologies, and harvest the enormous efficiency opportunity. 🎉 Bio-cm is our winner of the Regional Final Europe! Whoop whoop! 🏆🥂 They wowed the jury with their innovative solution to repurposed agricultural waste into insulation boards for conventional building systems. Their mission? To add value to invaluable waste through their unique fibre extraction process, significantly cutting carbon emissions while providing extra income for farmers. 🌾🌍 The jury was highly impressed, not only by the innovation but also by the potential impact on the construction industry. "Renovation projects are massive right now, and the materials currently used are very harmful. Bio-CM offers a great alternative, and it's fantastic that they are helping farmers in the process," said the jury. They also appreciated the clarity and honesty of the pitch. 🎤✨ For Bio-CM, taking part in ClimateLaunchpad has been an incredible journey. "ClimateLaunchpad was key in shaping our idea into a feasible business model, thanks to their valuable expertise and guidance," they shared. Casablanca, I had the honor to be interviewed by the Moroccan media icon Ouadih Dada of 2MTV to talk about our upcoming Cleantech Innovate Forum. This was not just a conversation but a testament to years of relentless effort. Navigating an unknown, complex system with no initial network, funding or partnerships, it took us dedication, sweat, own investment and perseverance to build what we have today. Thanx to many great people and first-believers. Alhamdulillah, the fruits are ripe. Cleantech is the world’s largest and fastest-growing market, and to keep pace with it, we must continue to invest in building a strong ecosystem of entrepreneurs with impact. These innovators won’t just battle climate change; they’ll create lasting change for global communities across various sectors. Through the ClimateLaunchpad Morocco and Climovation program, we’ve proudly raised and coached over 100 cleantech startups, contributing to the world’s largest and smartest cleantech and green business ideas competition. It’s been a long journey, but now, we’re seeing the real impact of this work. A huge thank you to everyone involved in this journey—from our forum speakers, partners, and volunteers to the incredible team at EBRD - SME Finance & Development - Morocco, especially Hiba Rizk and Ghassane Bouhia, for making this possible. CLIMATELAUNCHPAD VIETNAM 2024 - BOOT CAMP RECAP From July 16 to 18 and July 23 to 25, the Boot Camp training activities of ClimateLaunchpad Vietnam 2024 took place successfully with active participation from the start-up teams, under the guidance of Mr. Ron Bloemers, an expert in the field of green startups and Vietnamese experts including Dr. Tran Luong Son, MSc. Dang Bao Khanh and MSc. Nguyen Hong Long. We are honored to have the participation of Mr. Ron Bloemers, who has over 25 years of full circle, hands-on experience and network in the global renewables/cleantech industry. He has proven examples of cleantech scaleups that he trained/coached/mentored to global success (as from their early stages) in coaching/mentoring relationship. Mr. Ron Bloemers is also the founder and managing partner of Start-U-up - a boutique, private cleantech business accelerator based in Amsterdam that helps cleantech startups and scaleups accelerate to global success. He is the early pioneer in corporate sustainability, ESG, sustainable finance & accounting, and LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) at the Institute for Environmental Control Science (Economic Faculty, University of Amsterdam), the Institute for Applied Environmental Economics (The Hague), and Unilever. During the Boot Camp, our teams joined Mr. Ron Bloemers and Vietnamese experts to go through lessons directly related to developing and building projects/business models. Start-up teams had access to knowledge about the market and customers to increase efficiency in resource mobilization, financial management, product innovation, and environmental impact assessment. In addition, our teams were also consulted and had the opportunities to discuss directly with leading experts in the field of green startups and climate change response, gaining a lot of useful knowledge to support their ideas. Once again, we would like to thank the teams and our experts for your enthusiastic participation and positive exchanges in the recent Boot Camp training series!
