It’s good to be back at Wageningen! 🌿 Colleagues Sandra (Alexandra) Pesszer and David Metz had a fantastic time at the Wageningen University & Research Career Day, reminiscing about the good old days and connecting with the community of new students. It was great to see a lot of interest and curiosity about how we drive positive change in organic agriculture, with students from food safety, quality, and sustainability programs eager to know how we motivate consumers, grow the #organic market, and put #sustainability in the center of our work. Thank you to all the students for sharing your stories, it was really inspiring to learn how much our values and mission resonate! Some takeaways about organic and regenerative agriculture from the “Net Positive Network” gathering yesterday in the Netherlands. These reflect the promise, tensions and tendencies I witness around the world, also last month in NY Climate Week. On the one hand….. There was an impressive attendance by 120 CEOs, marketing directors, sustainability leads and founders from retail, food service and food companies, as well as farm groups, investors and global supply chain leaders. And there was a heartwarming and clear desire to collaborate to advance sustainable agriculture, and more plant- based & healthy diets. The network, well facilitated by Deloitte, has fostered multiple commitments & projects. There was also clear focus on organic food and farming, with the new Dutch national Organic Action Plan, recent investments in organic market development and public procurement, and positive reflections on new goals, actions and opportunities for organic market development and farm conversion from both the ministry of agriculture and retail leaders like Lidl Nederland. Some pieces are falling in place for organics in the NL! To support this, I presented lessons from Denmark, about how we grew the organic market to the world’s highest level through: ✅ Policy ✅ Partnerships with Retailers ✅ Capacity building and collaboration in the farmer-processor-food professional-consumer organization Organic Denmark On the other hand…. Many actors seem to have hitched their wagons to “regenerative agriculture” a wonderfully aspirational term coined by organic pioneers in the USA to describe the goals of organic farming. But it was clear that “regenerative agriculture” had highly varied definitions, from serious actors with principles & steps to improve soil & biodiversity and reduce nitrogen pollution—and measure these outcomes-- to ambiguous concepts offering a few changes in farm practices. Rebranding companies, including some of the world’s largest producers of pesticides, as “regenerative” on that basis, however well-intentioned, is greenwashing. This poses reputational risk to all who use the term. Some actors also questioned whether “regenerative” can be a product guarantee as there is no legal definition. “What can we even write on the packaging?” one asked. In light of this, some actors are choosing to build regenerative communication and claims on a solid platform of organic standards, principles, certification and consumer awareness. Dutch pioneer Tradin Organic, embraced regenerative as an aspirational term and as a natural part of organic production, becoming Regenerative Organic Certified. The trust and potential in Regenerative Organic was further underscored last month with the Regenerative Organic partnership with Amazon & Whole Foods in the US boosting regenerative organic products. Networks like the Net Positive Network may help companies sort these issues out and collaborate on solutions. #regenerative #organic #organicfarming

🥜 Harvest Season for Organic Peanuts 🥜 Did you know China is one of the world’s largest peanut producers, contributing about 40% of global production? The unique growing conditions across different regions in China help create peanuts that are rich in flavor and perfect for various uses. Our dry team was recently in China visiting our suppliers and reviewing the 2024 crop. In the south, the harvests of the country concluded earlier in September while in the North, the harvest has commenced since last weekend.    Uncharacteristically heavy rainfall has been experienced in the Northern region, therefore, assessments are currently underway to evaluate the crop and the impact the heavy rains may have on harvest quality and quantity.    👉 Have more questions about our organic peanuts?
