Sustainability, economic growth and decent work – Our new study explores how sustainable textile production can thrive in Viet Nam’s apparel industry. It explores challenges, opportunities and the necessary steps towards textile circularity. The study “Pre-consumer textile waste recycling in Viet Nam” brings together insights from key players in Viet Nam’s textile and apparel industry. From improved transparency and collective action in the waste sector, to investments in advancing recycling infrastructure, Viet Nam has a unique position to transform its textile management landscape. A shift to circularity reduces the environmental impact of its textile industry and enables a sustainable textile production. Key findings: 1️⃣Manufacturers should start sorting textile waste at source. 2️⃣The waste sector must function as an integral part of the textile supply chain. 3️⃣International recyclers should seek cooperation with local recyclers to focus on community needs and knowledge. 4️⃣Global brands should guide and accelerate improvements in waste management practices. 5️⃣ All stakeholders and competitors should jointly drive systemic change at scale and speed.

The Munich Security Conference #MSC2025 was a stark reminder that the international community is facing a complex and evolving crisis. Our values, institutions and partnerships are under threat. Also this year, the conference underlined the crucial role of #InternationalCooperation in a world of #multipolarization and in tackling global challenges such as #ClimateChange, #FoodSecurity, #ResourceScarcity and #PoliticalInstabilities. Therefore, a rule-based multilateral and robust world order as well as strong investments in partnerships and alliances are urgently needed. 🌊 As part of the Food Security Track, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH organized a side event on the Water-Energy-Food Nexus with a focus on the #Sahel region. The discussion centered on how a combination of improved water governance, agricultural approaches and alternative energy production linked to local conflict resolution mechanisms creates a virtuous cycle. Our regional partners showcased diverse and innovative ways in which this approach builds resilience in communities – and fosters peace. This has already been an integral part of the #SahelResiliencePartnership with World Food Programme and UNICEF. Special thanks go to our panelists Jochen Flasbarth, Cindy McCain, Damtien L. Tchintchibidja and Lassina Zerbo for their valuable inputs and Susanne Schmeier for the great facilitation. ♀️ UN Women and GIZ are working together to strengthen the meaningful participation of women leaders and experts in peace and transition processes in the conflict-ridden region of the Arab States. Against the backlash of human and gender rights around the globe, the promotion of local advocacy groups and female voices are more important than ever. Only through meaningful participation of women can we reach sustainable peace and social cohesion! A special thank to our speakers Nils Annen, Geir Otto Pedersen, Maha Yahya, Manal Radwan and Anneliese Dodds for this essential discussion and Sofia Calltorp for the moderation. Last but not least, I want to thank Ambassador Christoph Heusgen, Ambassador Rainer Rudolph and Benedikt Franke – and the entire MSC team – for the strong partnership, excellent cooperation and for hosting this major conference. 🌍 Africa in a Fragmented World: Insights from #MSC2025 The global landscape is becoming increasingly fragmented—geopolitical tensions are rising, multilateralism is weakening, and economic inequalities are deepening. In this shifting order, Africa faces both challenges and opportunities. At #MSC2025, the #TanaForum, supported by GIZ African Union, hosted a crucial discussion on how Africa can navigate these changes while safeguarding its security and economic stability. High-level speakers included: 🔹 H.E John Dramani Mahama (President of Ghana, Chair of the Tana Forum) 🔹 Lassina Zerbo (Former Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, Tana Board Member) 🔹 Ingrid-Gabriela Hoven (Vice Speaker of the Board of Directors, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH) 🔹 Key Insights from the Discussion: ✅ Strategic & Inclusive Partnerships Are Crucial 🤝 Africa can no longer rely on traditional partnerships that do not serve its best interests. New alliances must be strategic, inclusive, and responsive to Africa’s evolving needs. The continent must take the lead in defining its own engagement models rather than being a passive actor. ✅ Rebuilding Trust in Global Governance 🏛️ There is growing distrust in international governance structures, which often fail to address Africa’s concerns equitably. To foster sustainable development, Africa must rebuild trust—both within the continent and globally—by strengthening its institutions and advocating for fairer multilateral frameworks. ✅ Inclusive Governance for Sustainable Development 👥 Governance must be more accountable, transparent, and inclusive, ensuring that every voice—especially the most vulnerable—is represented in decision-making. Strong institutions that prioritize citizen engagement are vital for Africa’s stability. ✅ Resilience Through Homegrown Solutions 🔄 With rising security threats and economic challenges, Africa must tap into its youth, natural resources, and local innovations to drive sustainable development. The future lies in leveraging technology, entrepreneurship, and intra-African cooperation. 🌟 The Road Ahead: As global power dynamics shift, Africa has the opportunity to lead with bold, innovative solutions that secure its economic and political future. Strengthening partnerships, investing in local capacities, and fostering resilient governance will be key in defining the continent’s trajectory. What are your thoughts? How can Africa strengthen its position in an increasingly fragmented world? Share your insights below! 👇🏾 #TanaForum #AfricaRising #Geopolitics #Resilience #Leadership #FutureofAfrica

Greetings from Munich and #MSC2025! The Munich Security Conference 2025 is still ongoing, and the discussions at two of our GIZ high-level side events were focused on the pivotal role #CriticalMinerals play in shaping the future of the #EnergyTransition and #GlobalSecurity. A few key takeaways from our sessions: 🔑 The intersection of #sustainability and security is more crucial than ever. A forward-thinking, sustainable raw materials policy is key to ensuring that critical minerals are a force for global cooperation rather than conflict. 💡 Investment in #innovation is essential to enhance the efficiency and safety of mineral extraction technologies, driving progress in the sector. 🌍 Strengthening international cooperation is vital to securing access to critical raw materials, promoting sustainable mining practices and #CircularEconomy to safeguard both human rights and the environment. Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH is committed to maximizing the economic potential of critical minerals while actively mitigating Environmental, Social, and Governance (#ESG) risks. By focusing on transparency, participation, and strengthening environmental and social standards, we aim to foster local value creation in our partner countries and drive meaningful, impactful change. A big thank you to our partners UNIDO, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt for the excellent collaboration. And a special thanks to the incredible panelists for their insightful contributions in our discussions! Looking forward to continuing this important dialogue. Jochen Flasbarth @Gerd Müller Stefan B. 🤝 Joint visit of the Directors of LuxDev and GIZ to Costa Rica 🇨🇷 Last week, Manuel Tonnar, Director General of LuxDev, and Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel, Chairman of the Board of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH, conducted a joint mission to deepen ties between both development agencies. 📍 During the mission, the directors met with several bilateral and multilateral partners. They were received by Minister of Foreign Affairs Arnoldo Andre - Tinoco, ahead of the ceremony marking 60 years of German Cooperation 🇩🇪 in Costa Rica. 🌱 The delegation also visited GIZ-led coffee sector projects promoting sustainable production across the value chain, identifying potential synergies with LuxDev’s initiatives in Latin America and the Caribbean. 🌍 LuxDev and GIZ are already collaborating in Togo, Benin, Rwanda, and Senegal, focusing on impact finance, forestry, digitalization, and vocational training. The power of collaboration between the public and private sectors is undeniable in driving sustainable change in development. My trip to Mexico underscored this as I witnessed firsthand how Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH is spearheading innovative partnerships to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs). The strategic Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Human Rights Due Diligence, hosted by AHK Mexiko | CAMEXA stood out among other insightful events. This engaging breakfast session brought together key players such as Mercedes-Benz México, ZF Group and Siemens, along with civil society representatives. Together with others, Alberto de Icaza, Johannes Hauser and I discussed the implementation of the Multi-Company Grievance Mechanism (MRDH), an initiative designed to empower supply chains in reporting human rights and environmental concerns. This aligns with the German Due Diligence Act and underscores our commitment to fostering fairer, more sustainable supply chains. Kudos to Julia Unger and everyone involved for facilitating this critical dialogue. Moreover, the moderated discussion on developing and scaling innovative climate solutions was equally invigorating. Partnering with startups and the private sector, we explored avenues to secure funding from the Green Climate Fund. The passion and creativity of the entrepreneurs were truly inspiring. Programs like CATAL1.5T are paving the way for over 30 climate startups to achieve significant greenhouse gas reductions in Mexico – it was great to meet some of these change-makers in person! These experiences reaffirm how GIZ builds on the power of partnerships to advance sustainable development and to achieve the SDGs. I am excited to continue our collaborative journey towards a sustainable future!
