Maastricht University Institute of Data Science's Distinguished Professor Michel Dumontier held a presentation at last week's "UAB AI in Medicine and Nursing Symposium" in Birmingham in Alabama, USA. https://lnkd.in/eP-pEXYQ In his presentation "Generating (useful) synthetic data for medical research and AI application", Michel Dumontier addressed the growing importance of synthetic data in overcoming challenges related to data privacy and scarcity in healthcare. The presentation explores how artificially created datasets, which mimic the statistical properties of real patient data without exposing sensitive information, can be leveraged to advance medical research and enhance AI models. It delves into techniques like Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for generating high-fidelity synthetic data and discusses their applications in disease diagnosis. The presentation also highlights the ethical considerations, emphasizing the need for robust regulatory frameworks to ensure data quality and patient confidentiality while fostering innovation in medical science. The Symposium was organized by the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences at Maastricht University (DACS), UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, UAB Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and UAB School of Nursing. Dr. Thomas Cleij, Dean of the Maastricht University - Faculty of Science and Engineering, Dr. Pietro Bonizzi, and Bas Lemmens also attended the symposium. #umdatascience #datascience #AI #artificialintelligence #AIinMedicine #AIinNursing #AIinHealthcare #medicalresearch #symposium #collaboration #syntheticdata #dataprivacy

Looking back at last week most remarkable events, professors and academics from Maastricht University visited Augusta University, Georgia Institute of Technology and University of North Georgia to exchange on cyber security, AI, and computer science. The delegation also had the opportunity to visit Augusta University Cyber Operations Center. 🔐Partnership opportunities in cybersecurity between universities in the Netherlands and Georgia could take advantage of both regions' growing focus on cybersecurity education, research, and workforce development. 🛡️ Cybersecurity in the Netherlands is a critical priority, as the country is highly digitized and deeply integrated into global networks. The Netherlands is not only home to a significant number of multinational companies and financial institutions but also plays a key role in the global internet infrastructure. #cybersecurity #AI #cybersecuritypolicy #datasecurity #infosec #cybertraining
