🗓️ #UpRights will take part in a three-day capacity-building #training for Ukrainian lawyers, hosted by the Ukraine Legal Network in partnership with REDRESS, the University of Amsterdam, and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) from November 6 – 8.    📖 The training will provide #resources and support for lawyers assisting victims of war-related harms in #Ukraine.    ⏱️ On November 7th, UpRights' Asa S. and valerie gabard will participate in a panel addressing the accountability efforts in Ukraine, including the role of the International Criminal Court, national adjudication of international crimes cases, and universal jurisdiction efforts in response to the war in Ukraine since 2022.     ⚖️ Key topics will include legal and practical challenges in prosecuting war crimes and the role of NGOs and civil society in supporting #accountability efforts for war crimes.    UpRights looks forward to supporting the work of lawyers and civil society in pursuit of justice for victims.

Last week, the #USAID "Justice for All" program, in partnership with Ukrainian and international stakeholders, hosted its Second Annual Conference on "Justice in National Courts in War Crimes Cases." At this year’s #conference, drawing from #UpRights work on the Benchbook for the Adjudication of International Crimes under Ukrainian Domestic Law, developed with Ukrainian and international experts, judges, and support from USAID, David Kinnecome shared insights on recent efforts to strengthen the #Ukrainian judiciary's capacity in handling #internationalcrimes cases. David also discussed the manual entitled Judgment Drafting in International Crimes Cases: An Instructional Handbook with Step-by-Step Guidance for Judges, developed by international experts from #UpRights and Ukrainian experts and made available for the first time at the conference. Recent #allegations of human rights #violations involving the Mozambican military forces that have been providing security for #TotalEnergies' liquified natural gas (LNG) project in Cabo Delgado in the Northern part of #Mozambique, have once again underscored the complexities of conducting business in conflict zones. Last year, #UpRights conducted to an independent expert report commissioned by Justiça Ambiental!, Friends of the Earth Europe, Friends of the Earth, and Milieudefensie, which assessed the Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) process for the Mozambique LNG project operated by TotalEnergies  Our #report noted concerns about how the #HRDD process underprioritized the armed #conflict that has affected the region since 2017, highlighting the need for a conflict-sensitive approach that accounts for potential human rights impact of the project on the local communities, the security forces' role in the conflict, and the relevance of international humanitarian and criminal law in these contexts. As these troubling allegations surface, they reinforce the importance of ensuring that HRDD frameworks fully consider the specific challenges of conflict-affected areas and of a thorough and sensitive approach in safeguarding communities and addressing the potential for complicity in human rights violations and international crimes.
