Campus Connect: The future is water 💧 Extreme weather conditions, natural disasters, the failure of climate mitigation & adaptation, and water crises are some of the most likely and impactful current risks. The availability of water for agriculture is jeopardized by climate change. Globally, we are increasingly seeing that droughts and floods threaten our food production. Wageningen University & Research (WUR) and other knowledge partners play a key role in addressing these challenges and developing policies. Additionally, the Wageningen Campus is a place where innovative startups are encouraged to accelerate. This is crucial because 60% of our global water shortages must be solved through new technologies. 👩🔬 This Campus Connect event on Water is intended as an inspiring gathering, offering a glimpse into the operations of two water tech companies and several current water projects on campus, all focused on Food & Water Security. As Sjoukje Heimovaara (President of the Executive Board of WUR) aptly put it, "without action, no water, no food for the future." 📅 Thursday October 10, 16:00-18:00  📍 Impulse, Stippeneng 2, Wageningen Campus. Speakers during the event include Annelies Schenk, Raphael Fredon, PhD, Tiemen Nanninga, Alexander van der Kleij, and Kirsten Dekkers. Please register here: https://lnkd.in/gdErJUaT

Opening exhibition: Food for Thought 📸 An average meal travels around 30.000 kilometres before it reaches our plates. Where does our food come from? Like many students and employees on Wageningen Campus, photographer and filmmaker Kadir Van Lohuizen unravels the world behind our food. His search is captured in a beautiful documentary and photo series with the title Food for Thought. His work is in 2024 on display at the Maritime Museum Amsterdam, but now on our campus as well. Join Van Lohuizen for the opening of his outside exhibition to look at our food systems through a different lens. 📅 Thursday 3 October, 12:00-13:00  📍 Impulse, Wageningen Campus Van Lohuizen visualises what often remains outside our field of vision: where and how is our food produced? He portrays how the Netherlands, Kenya, the United States, the United Arab Emirates and China organise food production in a large-scale and efficient way. This approach evokes both admiration and questions: what are the effects on nature, people and animals, and how future-proof is this system? This leads to amazement and perplexity, emotions that also live on Wageningen Campus. 🌿 What do the images evoke in you? And what does that say about you and your position in the food system – both as a researcher and as a consumer. Enter into a conversation about the food systems of the future and discover what it requires of us to build that sustainable future. Also look at the system through a different lens. Who knows where new perspectives and connections can lead to. https://lnkd.in/e-bk5_VU

Shared Research facilities – user story 🤝   Joint investment in research equipment is a longstanding practice at the Wageningen Laboratory of Food Chemistry, supported by subsidies from the Regio Deal Foodvalley and the Shared Research Facilities team at Wageningen University & Research (WUR). This provides researchers access to advanced instruments and opportunities for innovative research.  Equipment serves a broad range of applications but comes with high costs. ‘It's impossible for the average research group or startup to afford such equipment independently, including our laboratory,’ explains Henk Schols, Emeritus Personal Professor of Carbohydrate Biochemistry in Foods. ‘Therefore, jointly investing in and utilizing such often unique equipment is a logical choice.’ According to Wouter de Bruijn, Assistant Professor of Phytochemicals at the Food Chemistry Chair Group, who has now taken over from Schols, jointly investing in and sharing research equipment has more benefits. It often leads to collaborative research with research groups within WUR and other universities as well as with businesses and other practical partners. 'For instance, we conducted a study with Heineken on phytochemicals, small molecules analyzed in by-products from the brewing process. The aim was to use these molecules in the future to extend the shelf life of alcohol-free beer.' 🍻 De Bruijn, also explored, alongside Unilever and two other companies, how to enrich foods with iron without causing discoloration. Another example is a collaboration where De Bruijn and his colleagues, along with NIZO Food Research, the HAS Green Academy in Den Bosch, and the industry, are investigating other components present in plant-based protein powders. 'All these studies were conducted with equipment made accessible through joint investments.' Startup NanoMoi, located at Wageningen campus, contributes to the restoration of Rembrandt’s The Night Watch! 🖼️ In the second part of August, the museum’s visiting public has been able to see how the NanoMoi measuring instrument has contributed to the restoration of the iconic and one of the world's most famous paintings: Rembrandt’s The Night Watch. The device from NanoMoi, which is a spinoff of Wageningen University & Research, is helping to measure the effects of solvents that are used during the restoration process.🔬 Solvents are used to remove old varnish layers, but they can sometimes cause long-term damage to the paint. That’s where NanoMoi's innovative technology comes in—using laser light and smart algorithms, their device measures the mobility of pigment particles, helping restorers minimize the forming of cracks and prevent degradation. Founder Jesse Buijs explains: “The more mobile the particles are, the softer the paint is at this stage. A sophisticated algorithm is able to read this from the responding laser beams. This algorithm forms the basis of our method.” Buijs has been working with the Rijksmuseum for ‘about seven years’. He began by testing his device on artificially aged canvases, and then used it on a number of small but real paintings before he eventually moved onto the current task of The Night Watch. Buijs: “More paintings and other applications, such as measurements for 3D printing and the stability of food products, may subsequently follow.” #rijksmuseum #restoration #thenightwatch

Supporting locally-led development in Afghanistan with science: a collaboration between Village of Peace and the Wageningen Science Shop Tuesday 10th of September, people gathered at the campus of Wageningen to celebrate the remarkable collaboration between Village of Peace and the Wageningen Science Shop. The evening brought together individuals united by their concern and love for the Afghan people, particularly considering the issue of food insecurity. With nearly 20 million Afghans facing food insecurity and 6 million suffering from acute malnutrition, Laurens Lagerwerf, CEO of Village of Peace, emphasized the critical need for food security to break the cycle of poverty, violence, and injustice in Afghanistan. The collaboration with the Science Shop was formed to evaluate the work that Village of Peace is already doing: High Diversity Gardening (HDG). 🌱 Village of Peace has been working to empower local communities, particularly vulnerable groups like widows and children. Their focus is on the long run. Emergency aid is combined with training and programs, such as the HDG training, to work towards self-reliance and local ownership. Miss Amina, involved in the training, mentioned: ‘These women have not only become self-sufficient, but became role-models.’ And one of the participants said: ‘I thought working the land was only for men. Now I own my own garden and grow healthy food for my family.’ 🤝 The local representative of Village of Peace, Mr. Farid Hakimi, said: ‘The program empowers people, and the progress so far is encouraging, but much more should happen.’ This is why Village of Peace sought the expertise of the Wageningen Science Shop. Their projects were creating tangible results, but a collaboration with the Science Shop was needed to find a way to back this up with evidence. The collaboration with the Science Shop connected Village of Peace with students, interns and researchers at WUR, who aim at putting knowledge into action. The collaboration did not only help with creating a data collection tool for HDG program evaluation, but also included trainings on how to use the tool and analyse the data. This is all with the aim of Afghani program staff being able to carry out this process independently in the future. The international setting of this project was a challenging but enriching endeavour for everyone involved.🌍 The result of this fruitful collaboration was not only the improvement in monitoring, but also the start of a new organisation which was presented during the evening: SEEDS Afghanistan. SEEDS is a research institute that is focused on tackling the complex issue of food security in Afghanistan by engaging with local partners to work on practical solutions that will make a real difference for the most disenfranchised in Afghanistan. They will be working on sustainable solutions, empowerment of locals, and practical research on the availability, affordability and accessibility of nutrition.

Students at WUR who have been trained as campus tour guides, offer several types of tours around campus, such as the unifarm tour, the sustainable tour and of course the campus tour. Past week, the campus tour team had a special guest. Betty, 93-years-old, send in a wish to ‘Wageningse uitdaging’. The volunteers from this organisation connect and support organisations and people. Betty's wish was to take a look inside the university. The campus tour team happily responded to the request and tour guide Adriaan showed her around the Forum building. With help from the women at the reception and the library, Betty enjoyed her time tremendously. After the tour, as a cherry on the cake, she was invited by Compass to drink a coffee in the grand cafe.   Get to know more about the campus tours here: https://lnkd.in/eDkuaNx2
