As global emissions continue to rise, many of the world’s major cities are getting hotter — and more polluted. In fast-growing Delhi, the air quality is so poor that it has triggered a massive public health crisis, and the problem is often worse in households that use biofuel for cooking, and where proper ventilation is lacking. What role could architects play in improving the health and wellbeing of these communities? 🤔 #RedesignEverythingChallenge winners Abhimanyu Singhal and Depanshu Gola have been exploring this issue since 2021. With their project BreatheEasy, they are looking into how vernacular technology — like wind catchers and solar chimneys — could help reduce air pollution in homes that need it most. In a new interview, we discuss their most unexpected findings, the role of adaptation in climate action, and why it’s so important to see “architecture as a service.” Read it here: https://bit.ly/3Ngi1bx Architecture for Dialogue

An international platform about the social impact of design.
Over ons
What Design Can Do (WDCD) was initiated in 2011 as a platform to showcase design as a catalyst of change and as a way of addressing the societal issues of our time. The story is told through our annual conference in Amsterdam, additional conferences in other parts of the world, the worldwide What Design Can Do Challenge, as well as our own publications and the WDCD blog. Across all of our initiatives, our aim is to present best practices and visions, to provoke discussion and to facilitate fruitful exchange between disciplines. Why? To demonstrate the power of design; to show that it can do more than make things pretty. To call on designers to stand up, take responsibility and consider the beneficial contribution that they can make to society. In 2018 WDCD focusses its attention on climate action and social justice by challenging the creative community to contribute solutions in its own capacity. ‘Designers are optimists, so we will approach these issues with lots of positivity,’ WDCD founder Richard van der Laken says. ‘Instead of worrying about problems, we are going to attack them with all the creative energy and inventiveness we can bring together.’

"We do not need to reinvent anything. We just need to understand and use biology." 🍀 As brothers growing up in Mexico, Axel and Alexis Gómez-Ortigoza were fascinated by technology and nature. Today, they are leading a material revolution as the founders of Polybion, a company growing bio-textiles using bacteria and fruit waste. Their main offering — a cultivated cellulose called Celium™ — is vegan, organic, and highly customisable, making it a compelling alternative to animal leather and plastic. Last week, it even made its runway debut as part of the Ganni A/S Spring 2025 collection, marking yet another exciting milestone for the biotech company. Is it time to redesign seed banks as we know them? 🌽 In the last century alone, hundreds of species of plants have been driven to extinction. Many more are currently on the brink, threatened by the changing climate and the way we grow and trade our food. But is it too late to imagine a different future? Designer Carla Rotenberg Taboada offers an answer through her project, A Bite of Extinction. Her research explores the alarming loss of food diversity and culinary heritage in Spain, and dives into what creatives could do to better collaborate with scientists, farmers and chefs on this issue. On the blog today, we speak to the #RedesignEverythingChallenge winner about what is lost when local produce is forgotten, and how she believes seed banks could be turned into places of community. 😍 Read the interview: https://bit.ly/3BaLMb2

Although embellishments are small, their social and environmental impact is massive. With 20 billion embellished garments produced annually—and many discarded after just a few uses—hundreds of billions of non-recyclable beads end up in landfills every year. Cellsense is an exciting new start-up that offers a more sustainable alternative. Led by designer Aradhita Parasrampuria, the team has found a way to transform algae and bacterial cellulose into a range of vibrant and non-toxic bio-embellishments. They have also developed technology to help automate and streamline the production of beaded fabric, allowing them to save time, labour and energy. Here, Aradhita tells us more about the organisms she works with and the "design possibilities" they bring to the fashion and cosmetics industry 👉 https://bit.ly/3ZopV9U #RedesignEverythingChallenge #biodesign

👨🚒 In 2021, there were 19 major wildfire disasters globally — the third-highest number recorded in this century. Suat Batuhan Esirger was a volunteer during the worst-ever wildfire in Turkey and saw the devastating effects firsthand. He co-founded ForestGuard less than a month later, with the goal of developing an early warning system that could detect forest fires within the first 15 minutes. By the end of the year, they had their first prototypes and patents in hand. Learn more about how these devices work today — and why it's so important to protect the forests we have left — in our brand new interview with the #RedesignEverythingChallenge winner: https://bit.ly/3ZaNBi4
