Connecting the world to the stories that matter.
Over ons
We are a global platform connecting photojournalists, documentary photographers and our worldwide audiences through trustworthy storytelling. World Press Photo was founded in 1955 when a group of Dutch photographers organized a contest (“World Press Photo”) to expose their work to an international audience. Since then, our mission has expanded. Our contests have grown into one of the world’s most prestigious competitions, rewarding the best in photojournalism and documentary photography. Through our successful worldwide exhibition program, we present to millions of people the stories that matter. The World Press Photo Foundation is a creative, independent, nonprofit organization, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. We appreciate the support of our global partner, the Dutch Postcode Lottery, and our strategic partner, PwC.

Free Press Unlimited is calling on the Israeli government to protect journalists, provide access to medical aid, and grant international media access to Palestine and the occupied territories. Read more and sign the petition: https://lnkd.in/ermcNS_5
Today Free Press Unlimited calls on Prime Minister Netanyahu to immediately allow safe passage for those in need of medical care. Two #journalists are currently fighting for their lives after targeted attacks last weekend. The attacks and killing of journalists, clearly identified by their ballistic vests and helmets with PRESS on them, need to stop. At least 128 journalists have been killed in a year and this number keeps growing. ➡️Sign our petition: https://ow.ly/SYUI50TMyLa ➡️Read more: https://ow.ly/Qv3550TMyLb #JournalismIsNotACrime

‘A Palestinian Woman Embraces the Body of Her Niece’ by Mohammed Salem for Reuters, was taken on this day, one year ago. This image shows Inas Abu Maamar (36) cradling the body of her niece Saly (5) who was killed, along with four other family members, when an Israeli missile struck their home, in Khan Younis, Gaza, 17 October 2023. At the outset of Israel's large-scale military offensive in Gaza, Israel instructed Gazans to evacuate to the south for their safety. Yet, according to reports from The Guardian and Al Jazeera, Israeli airstrikes heavily bombarded Khan Younis, in southern Gaza, from mid-October. The photographer describes this photo, taken just days after his own wife gave birth, as a “powerful and sad moment that sums up the broader sense of what was happening in the Gaza Strip”. Over the past year, Israel's attacks on the occupied Palestinian territories have killed over 41,000 people and displaced more than 1.9 million. The jury recognized that this photographer was awarded for the same topic nearly a decade ago. Read more about the story awarded Photo of the Year 2024: https://lnkd.in/eBabSNUZ - Mohammed Salem is a Palestinian photojournalist based in the Gaza Strip who has been working with Reuters since 2003.

We add our condolences and sorrow at his passing. Paul Lowe was a great photographer (winner of four World Press Photo awards), who also took time to help upcoming photographers, especially in the Balkans. His impact will be felt for a long time.
It is with deep sorrow that we share the news of the passing of our dear friend and colleague Paul Lowe, whose brilliant life was cut short in Los Angeles, California on Saturday. Paul was a courageous and beloved comrade, and a deeply devoted father and husband. The loss is shocking and overwhelming, and our hearts go out to his wife and family. Photo by Amra Abadžić Lowe.
