Connecting the world to the stories that matter.
Over ons
We are a global platform connecting photojournalists, documentary photographers and our worldwide audiences through trustworthy storytelling. World Press Photo was founded in 1955 when a group of Dutch photographers organized a contest (“World Press Photo”) to expose their work to an international audience. Since then, our mission has expanded. Our contests have grown into one of the world’s most prestigious competitions, rewarding the best in photojournalism and documentary photography. Through our successful worldwide exhibition program, we present to millions of people the stories that matter. The World Press Photo Foundation is a creative, independent, nonprofit organization, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. We appreciate the support of our global partner, the Dutch Postcode Lottery, and our strategic partner, PwC.

These are the names of the 123 Palestinian journalists and media workers, three Lebanese, and two Israeli journalists killed in the past year. All but two were killed by Israeli forces. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) this is more journalists than have died in the course of any year since they began documenting journalist killings in 1992. As an organization promoting the importance of accurate photojournalism and documentary photography, we condemn the killing of journalists, as well as the harassment, detentions, and other reporting obstructions in Gaza, the West Bank, Israel, and beyond. Journalism plays an essential role in documenting history and serving the public interest by exposing realities too often obscured by disinformation and misinformation. We stand with the journalists and condemn the killing. Attacks targeting civilians — including journalists — violate international law. We call on the international community to uphold freedom of the press and protect the lives and safety of members of the media. We call for a ceasefire, and demand an end to the impunity in the killing of journalists.

“I hope the audience will be able to connect to the loss that is happening when these landscapes are destroyed, but will also see how the people, if they act together and create a strong movement, can change politics in their own country.” - Daniel Chatard Germany positions itself as a leader in the transition towards renewable energy by 2030, yet remains heavily dependent on coal for energy production. In the Rhineland, forests have been cleared and villages demolished since the 1970s to make way for the Hambach and Garzweiler open-pit coal mines. In 2012, activists began occupying parts of Hambach Forest and later the village of Lützerath to resist these measures, managing by 2023 to save a remainder of the forest and five of six such villages scheduled for destruction.
