Elkem’s Q2 2024 Results: Profitability improvements driven by enhanced operating performance Elkem reported an EBITDA of NOK 1,030 million in Q2 2024, in line with last year’s corresponding quarter and an improvement compared to the preceding three quarters. Operational improvements drove profitability, despite market headwinds. 🌱 Sustainability Focus Elkem completed a successful silicones expansion project in China, enhancing cost efficiency and environmental performance. Additionally, the company is researching a groundbreaking concept for silicon production to reduce CO2 emissions. 🌐 Market Outlook While market sentiment remains weak, we anticipate positive effects from our operational improvements and the successful production line ramp-up. Silicones expects improved demand in Europe and the US, while Silicon Products aims to benefit from better market conditions. Carbon Solutions expects still weak demand but capitalises on strong and diverse market positions.

Vegard Eidem Pedersen, one of our technical trainees, has written the latest blog in Elkem Magazine about his experience in our global trainee program. "It surprised me how quickly I was trusted with important tasks, and I had a steep learning curve to learn the different systems used for efficient project execution", Vegard writes. "As the project leader, my tasks were finding and coordinating with vendors, obtaining tenders, and discussing technical solutions with the internal team and other stakeholders affected by the project", he further states about his experience at Elkem's plant in Rana, Norway. Vegard's second and current outplacement is at another Norwegian plant in beautiful Bremanger. The trainee experience extends beyond the workplace. "So far in Bremanger, I have spent my weekends hiking if the weather is nice. I have also been offered the chance to go hunting in the autumn!", Vegard says. Pride Month 🏳️🌈 is coming to an end, but our commitment to cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace continues year-round. This month, we celebrate the resilience and strength of the LGBTQ+ community. At our Thamshavn plant, we have proudly raised the Pride flag for the second consecutive year to symbolize our commitment to inclusivity. As our Pride Ambassador, Jo Ingebrigt Melbye, said in an interview with Avisa ST, "It is about making sure everyone feels seen and included". Plant Manager Sondre Valle Hestvik adds that the metallurgical industry has historically been a tough industry with a "macho culture", making it even more important to take a stance. "Elkem is committed to diversity. This means that anyone should be able to work here, regardless of their sexual orientation," Hestvik says. As a global organization, we expect all of our colleagues to uphold these principles and champion our values. One of Elkem's core values is respect, which means we are fair, open and honest, and appreciate diversity. Happy Pride! 🌈 📸 Tormod Ytrehus / Mediehuset Sør-Trøndelag

🏃♂️ Elkem’s team spirit shone during the Heroes Race in Lyon, Course des Héros. With participation of 75 members of our local Elkem family, we demonstrated that solidarity and commitment are at the heart of our values. 🚶♀️🌳 30 walkers embraced the 5 km route, enjoying every step to appreciate the camaraderie and the beauty of our city. 🔍🌄 16 adventurers explored the discovery route, enriching their experience with the discovery of new horizons. 🏁🏃♀️ And 29 runners took up the challenge of the 8 km race, pushing their limits. At Elkem, we believe that every contribution counts and that it is together that we make a difference. This year, we ran in support of ODP (Œuvre des Pupilles Orphelins et Fonds d’Entraide des Sapeurs-Pompiers de France (ODP)) an association dedicated to taking care of the families of firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. We are proud of each participant, their energy, and their willingness to represent Elkem with so much pride. It is this collective strength that propels us forward and makes Elkem a place where we work together for a better future. #TeamSpirit #Solidarity #CommunityCommitment

Elkem to pilot CO2-free silicon production We are researching a groundbreaking new concept for silicon production, which aims to eliminate nearly all direct CO2 emissions. The concept, named Sicalo, involves capturing and recycling carbon in the process off gas and reusing it in the production process. Enova SF has granted Elkem 31 million NOK for a medium scale pilot, to be carried out in Kristiansand, Norway. Elkem’s ongoing research, in collaboration with SINTEF Industry and NORCE Norwegian Research Centre, previously received 16 MNOK in funding from Norges forskningsråd (The Research Council of Norway) There is still significant research needed before we can see this as a viable solution in full scale, but preliminary results are promising, and we are proud to have world class researchers and pilot facilities for working on these possible future technologies for the silicon industry, says Elkem CEO Helge Aasen. 📷: Anne Gry Messenlien, Elkem

Last week, our CTO and chairman of Prosess21, Håvard Moe, gave the opening speech at Industriuka (the Norwegian Industry Week). The key takeaways are summarised below: 🌎 Greenhouse gas emissions are increasing, and the world is getting warmer. At current trajectory, the world's carbon budget will be used up within 4-5 years if we are to achieve the 1.5C target. 🏭 European industry is progressing, but not fast enough. Steel and cement have the largest emissions of greenhouse gases. There are major investments done to decarbonize these production processes, but it is not happening fast enough to meet the 1.5C target. 👷 The climate transition comes at a cost, with increased power and CO2 prices posing a threat to competitiveness and activity level for European industry. A number of industrial companies have shut down production and many jobs have been lost. 💰 Climate policy, geopolitics, and securing jobs are interconnected. Measures introduced by the US, China, and the EU affects the scope of opportunities and development for Norwegian industry. 💎 The Norwegian process industry is well positioned with established market positions towards European customers and can take a stronger role in securing Europe's access to strategic and critical raw materials. 🇪🇺 In order to succeed, Norway must not be left out of the EU's "Fit for 55" package, the EEA Agreement must be applied to the entire breadth of trade policy, and access to renewable energy at competitive prices must be ensured while keeping the cost of decarbonization within the industry's tolerance limit. 📸 : Powered by Telemark
