What is maritime autonomy? Is it unmanned, lower manning, moving specialist functions or tasks to shore? How do we prepare the next generation seafarers for constantly evolving technology? How do we encourage more young people to seek careers in Maritime? This and more we discussed at Kongsberg Digital 2024 simulator user conference held at Kalmar University in Sweden. What are your perspectives? How can we get the best heads, utilize the best of new technology, and have people stay longer at sea (or in a Remote Operations Centre). With Maersk Training, Kongsberg Digital, Chalmers University of Technology, Kalmar University and more.

During Maritime Week in Haugesund, Norway, Massterly (a Kongsberg Wilhelmsen joint venture) together with Reach Subsea and Kongsberg Maritime presented Ship of the Year 2024, Reach Remote 1, with a live demonstration of connectivity, onboard sensors and interaction with the Remote Operations Center. We are looking forward to the delivery of Reach Remote 1 and the start of some more sea-riously autonomous and remote control testing. Stay tuned for updates.
🚢💡 Veronica Charlotte Haugan | Jon Leon Ervik | Nils Haktor Bua | Ørnulf Jan Rødseth | Lars Benjamin Vold | Reidun Svarva | Dag Hole | Jostein Braaten | Kai Just Olsen | Edmund Brekke | Bjørg Mathisen Døving Tom Eysto¸| Jarle Coll Blomhoff | Ragnar Stangring | Alv Øidvin #ITSNorway #ITS #intelligentetransportsystemer #transport #mobilitet #samferdsel #teknologi #digitalisering #maritimITS #maritimeITS

A Dutch view on autonomy This week Massterly (a Kongsberg Wilhelmsen joint venture) have hosted a Dutch film crew, making a documentary for the national broadcaster about the environmental challenges in the marine industry. Our input is that lowering energy consumption, use of alternative fuels and electrification are the most important steps. A higher degree of automation, will enable the possibility of using less complicated, smaller and more agile ships in higher numbers, which can help solving a lot of issues related to congestions and emissions local and regional. Utilizing the available captains, navigators and engineers available in the best possible way, is important in many countries, and by repeating best practice over and over, optimizing the use of any energy source onboard, use of autonomy can be directly linked to reduced emissions.

Elise Botngård; first female captain in Massterly. Elise has served as the 1st officer with Massterly since August 2022. During these years, she has witnessed the onboard crew size decrease from 6 to 3 people, with another role being transferred to the remote control center this summer. Last Friday, Elise had her very first day as a captain on the battery-electric Therese. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/d9cZ8NTC Congratulations, Elise!

Leading up to MSC 108, IMO held two seminars and symposiums on autonomous vessels at their London headquarters. Our product officer Kristine Prøsch presented our view on the regulatory framework, and supporting the move from autonomy levels to a goal-based approach. Guidance for testing and approvals of systems and functions as alternative solutions according to Circ 1455 are also requested. Thanks to IMO for inviting us, and the opportunity to share experience and discuss concerns and opportunities.

Taking grand ideas from a PowerPoint to reality can sometimes feel like herding cats, but fear not! It's all about embracing the challenge with a dash of humor and a good deal of determination.🚀
