𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘆🎉 Who would have thought this 20 years ago? An important milestone in the green transition was reached this month. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘀 than gasoline cars in the total vehicle fleet in Norway. “𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀,” says Christina Bu from the Norwegian EV Association. ⚡ In Norway, there are 2.8 million passenger cars, and the Norwegian Road Traffic Information Council (OFV) announced in a press release last week that 754,303 of these are electric cars. ⚡ This constitutes 26.26 percent of the car fleet, and electric cars have just surpassed the 753,905 gasoline cars, which now make up 26.24 percent of the total. “This is historic. A milestone few saw coming ten years ago. The electrification of the passenger car fleet is progressing at a high pace, and Norway is moving rapidly towards becoming the first country in the world with a passenger car fleet dominated by electric cars,” says Øyvind Solberg Thorsen, director of OFV. The sales of electric vehicles are increasing worldwide. Global EV sales reached 20% in the last quarter of 2023, and it’s not just a wealthy country story anymore according to Colin McKerracher at BloombergNEF. More than 30 countries reached the tipping point of mass adoption (with pure electric cars now above 5% of new-sales) last year. Among them Thailand, Turkey and Costa Rica. Guatemala 🇬🇹 however has just started their EV journey. Time and time again I experience how the push for EVs in many countries is very much dependent on individuals and organisations. It’s a case of a bottom up approach, as well as a top down strategy. A great example of this is here in Guatemala where AMEGUA is doing such a great job promoting EVs. They were also instrumental in the process leading up to the Government’s decision to remove import taxes on EVs. This has resulted in EV sales increasing from 83 in 2022 to 308 in 2023, with sales expected to grow even more in 2024.
