Bird Monitoring Results: No Recorded Collisions Between Floating Offshore Wind Turbines and Birds 🙌 🦅 News from our project partner, Norwegian Offshore Wind: For over two years, a bird monitoring camera has been tracking the TetraSpar floating offshore wind turbine at Marine Energy Test Centre (METCentre), off the coast of Norway. The results are promising—no bird collisions have been recorded. Since January 2022, Spoor has mapped over 21,000 bird passages around the turbine, and despite an equipment adjustment in October 2023 to enhance detection capabilities, no collisions have been recorded. In collaboration with the Biodiversity Department at Multiconsult, this research provides crucial insights into how birds interact with floating offshore wind turbines. “These are very positive results,” says Arvid Nesse, head of METCentre and Norwegian Offshore Wind. “The knowledge we have gained through this project will be valuable for understanding the coexistence between birds and wind turbines.” At WENDY, we’re thrilled to see how technological innovations and real-world testing contribute to a sustainable coexistence between wildlife and renewable energy. ⚡ 🎉 Ask Helseth - Andreas Günther - Line Rude Jacobsen - Ralph Natter Berg - Jacob Winning Lehmann - Cato A. Exciting news from project partner Norwegian Offshore Wind: European Test Centres form alliance to accelerate floating offshore wind! 🤩 Five leading European offshore wind test sites have come together to form the #HiPoTeSis Alliance. The alliance—comprising BiMEP, CEO, Fondation OPEN-C, Marine Energy Test Centre (METCentre), and Plataforma Oceánica de Canarias (PLOCAN)—is focused on overcoming common industry challenges WENDY believes that by improving conditions for testing and demonstration projects, it will also allow for thorough environmental impact assessments at test sites, helping to create effective mitigation strategies before commercialisation. Arvid Nesse, CEO of METCentre and Norwegian Offshore Wind, emphasised that testing and demonstration are vital to bring costs down. Reducing the cost of offshore wind can increase the social acceptance for large-scale offshore wind projects as it will reduce the financial burden on taxpayers. 🌱💡
