What are the effects of mud contamination on reservoir fluid phase behavior? And why should you care 🤔? When drilling a well it is common to use an oil-based mud to keep over-pressure in the well (and avoid a blowout)! This mud is usually composed of paraffinic hydrocarbon components in the C7+ range that will mix with the reservoir fluid during sampling (to an unknown extent). If the mud content is increased, then the composition of all other components are decreased. In particular the C1 content is decreased 📉! For black-oil fluids, a reduction in the C1 content results in a decrease in the saturation pressure and a "shrunken" phase envelope. The critical point is also moved toward a lower pressure and temperature. This can be used as a rules of thumb for how the reservoir fluid will behave compared to PVT measured data 👨🔬. An animation of the effects of an increased mud content (Fm) ranging from 0 to 20 mole% is shown below! Mud contamination is automatically handled in our whitsonPVT software, by adding a set of separately characterized mud components ⚗. The mud composition is then split out from the lab reported composition using the gamma model to increase the accuracy of the fluid model development 🚀!

When taking MDT or OFT samples, the lab reported reservoir composition might have some or a lot of oil-based mud contamination 👷♂️! Having a good estimate (-> calculation) of the contamination level can be important for both fluid initialization and fluid model development! For fluid initialization it is important to know the contamination level, to be able to extract the "true" reservoir composition for mapping simulated reservoir fluid PVT properties (for example GOR versus depth, etc.) 📊. For fluid model development, it can be important to know the mud content because the component properties of the mud components might be very different from the reservoir fluid components (usually the mud is much more paraffinic). If we try to characterize our mud+reservoir fluid with one single carbon number (SCN) components, then we'll have a too paraffinic behavior for the actual reservoir fluid 👨💻. One solution for this problem is to split the the SCN components into reservoir and mud components (for example C7 and C7M, M - for mud)! This is exactly what we do seamlessly in our whitsonPVT software 🚀! The animation below shows the mass composition of a flashed oil sample with mud contamination as a combination of the clean fluid (blue) and the mud composition (brown). When the estimated mud contamination is increased, the percentage of the mud in the SCN components near C15 increases 💡! Want to learn more about the topic?
