I’ve been very quiet these past few days. The result of weeks of: - workplace visits, - inspections, - 1on1 interviews, - group facilitated talks, and - documentation deep dives… I’m now in the thick of the: - findings, - recommendations, - improvement action plans, and - executive summaries There is an art to all of this. Delivering meaningful information that can be acted upon immediately is my number one, two and three priority for my clients. It takes a lot of deep thinking but the reward at the end is knowing it’s making lasting change for all the right reasons. When Fines Aren’t the End: A $4M Wake-Up Call for Health and Safety Failures The $4M settlement by Auckland businessman Ron Salter, following the workplace death of Jamey Bowring, sets a critical precedent in New Zealand’s business landscape. Salter Cartage was fined $200,000 under the HSE but the Police have now seized millions more using the Criminal Proceeds Recovery Act. Key Statistics: ↳ $4M settlement under the Criminal Proceeds Recovery Act ↳ $200,000 fine under the Health and Safety in Employment Act ↳ Jamey Bowring, 25, tragically lost his life in a hazardous substances incident. This case raises serious concerns for business owners, especially in smaller, tightly-held companies where directors have direct operational involvement. The Police have stated this use of the Criminal Proceeds Act won’t be “routine” for health and safety breaches, but it’s evident that they are willing to explore its use in exceptional cases. For businesses, this serves as a reminder: health and safety compliance must be a priority, not just to avoid legal consequences, but to protect lives. Time will tell if this case is an anomaly or signals a shift in enforcement strategies. #HealthAndSafety #WorkplaceSafety #Compliance #Business #Regulation #CriminalProceedsAct ↳ Photo credit NZ Herald

There's something about the simplicity of life on a farm that puts things into perspective. After spending a weekend at a friend's dairy farm he manages, savouring fresh milk straight from the source (not the store!), we got to talking about the real challenges faced in both our industries-specifically health and safety. What came to light was more than just policy; it was about people. And as I learned, the real test of leadership lies in how much we value the lives and voices of our team. As with any good catch-up, we found ourselves talking about our respective industries, the challenges we face, and how we are coping. One conversation stood out to me, my friend mentioned how much he values the time spent with the health and safety professional who visits the farm. Health and safety is still new to him and many others in the industry, and these sessions are invaluable. However, his manager didn't have the same enthusiasm. Each time, the health and safety person visited, they were rushed through their duties, with constant reminders that "time is money" and other "critical tasks" took precedence. It became clear that the manager didn't place the same value on these discussions as my friend and the workers themselves. As we continued talking, I asked my friend what made him uncomfortable about his daily work or any particular tasks, and it was like opening the floodgates. He shared some critical concerns that has been on his mind, issues he didn't feel safe performing, nor not knowing how it should be performed. As a friend and health and safety professional, I encouraged him to reflect and take action on these concerns, providing suitable guidance and support. Here's the crux of the matter: no matter what role you hold within a business, be it an owner, manager or worker, the safety and lives of your team should be the highest priority. An owners or manager's role isn't about ticking boxes or watching the clock. It's about ensuring the wellbeing of every person on site. True leadership means valuing the voices of your team, acknowledging their concerns, and making sure that health and safety is embedded in every aspect of work culture, not as an afterthought, but as a core value. Your role goes beyond tasks and deadlines. It's about safeguarding the people who work for you, respecting their time and lives, and ensuring that they feel safe, valued, and heard. Let's not lose sight of what truly matters. Advanced Safety NZ #HealthAndSafety #Leadership #RuralSafety #FreshMilk

𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗭𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 This past week has been a tough one for our health and safety community in New Zealand. Multiple fatalities have been reported; lives lost due to incidents at work. Behind each of these numbers are real people, families, and communities forever changed. One of these incidents hit very close to home as I made a call to a friend of mine, just to check in. He worked for one of the companies that experienced a workplace fatality, and I needed to know if he was okay. Luckily, he was but he was the first at the scene. But for someone else's family, the outcome was devastating. They lost a loved one, and that person is never coming home again. This let me think over the past few days as I had the privilege of spending time with my family. I supported by son at a rugby tournament in Christchurch, cheered for him on the sideline, and shared in his joy. On Sunday, we went for a short hike together. Just a simple walk, but one that meant the world to us. These are the moments we often take for granted. But as I reflect, I can't help but think that some families won't have these moments again. Some children will grow up without their parent there to cheer them on, without that guiding hand to lift them when the walk gets too long or to pick them up on your shoulders when their legs are tired. All because someone went to work and didn't come home. This is why workplace health and safety is so much more. It is about protecting people, safeguarding futures, and ensuring that everyone who leaves for work in the morning comes home to their loved ones at night. As we being a new week, my thoughts are with the families who are missing someone today. We ow it to them, to ourselves, and to those we love to do better. To those who have lost a loved one, my heart goes out to you. #HealthAndSafety #FamilyFirst #WorkplaceSafety #NeverForget

𝗜𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗺𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 Italy's Senate has recently approved a bill to integrate workplace safety education into civic lessons in schools. This initiative comes amid a worrying rise in workplace fatalities-577 deaths in just the first seven months of 2024. The recent high deathroll has urgent the need for systemic change. The new legislation aims to build a culture of safety from the ground up-educating young people on labour rights, worker duties, and crucial protections. by doing this, Italy hopes to create citizens who are not only aware of their rights but also understand the critical importance of workplace Safety. Italy is also strengthening enforcement by recruiting 1,600 new labour inspections to help address safety concerns. By embedding safety into the education system, Italy is taking a proactive stance on prevention, not just response. It is about cultivating awareness, understanding rights, and promoting a safety -first mindset from a young age. This kind of initiative is a timely reminder for all nations that effective workplace safety isn't just the responsibility of businesses - it's about societal values. We need more emphasis on safety education, not just in training rooms but starting from schools. Let's learn from Italy's example. By building safety into our culture and preventing accidents before they happen. What do you think? Should countries push for more workplace education to start at schools? #WorkplaceSafety #PreventinIsBetterThanCure #GlobalSafety

G’day mate. The car tells me it’s 27degrees and the locals in Dubbo, NSW tell me it’s nothing 😅 Enjoying the chance to see the challenges faced by different teams spanning both NZ and Aus. Currently reviewing the day’s notes and compiling my next round of follow up questions and data requests. I love putting years of practice into action like this. What have been some of your favourite locations to work in?
