Antarctic Research Centre - Te Puna Pātiotio

We were honoured to partner last week with the Embassy of Argentina in Wellington and the Antarctic Research Centre - Te Puna Pātiotio at Victoria University of Wellington to honour 60 years of bilateral relations between New Zealand and Argentina with an event on 'Argentina and New Zealand in Antarctica: Multilateral Diplomacy and Scientific Collaboration'. After welcomes from our Director and Argentine Ambassador Maria Belen Bogado, our audience of scientists, international relations afficionados and friends of the Embassy lapped up the keynote address from Minister Fausto Lopez Crozet, the National Director for Antarctic Foreign Policy in Argentina's Foreign Ministry. After his inspiring reflections too there was a panel on bilat6eral collaborations in the southern continent with Alice R. from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade, Tim Naish from the ARC, and Gabriela Roldan, PhD from the University of Canterbury. The evening was a direct consequence of conversations in April in in Buenos Aires during the visit of our academic delegation, and a fitting final thematic offering from us to the New Zealand public.

Exciting news! 🌟 We’re thrilled to welcome Winter-Billington Alexandra (Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairoa, she/her) to the Antarctic Research Centre - Te Puna Pātiotio! Alex brings a rich background in glaciology, having completed her PhD in debris-covered glaciers and melt model uncertainties at the The University of British Columbia, Canada. Before joining us, she worked with Te Puna Pātiotio ARC on snow cover models in Aoraki Mt Cook and explored the influence of crevasses on heat budgets in Haupapa Tasman Glacier. What inspired her to join us? "He tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata - it is people, it is people, it is people. The collaborative and supportive culture at ARC makes it a fantastic place for developing and progressing ideas." At ARC, Alex will continue her research on uncertainty in melt predictions of debris-covered glaciers, involving fieldwork in Aotearoa, India, and Nepal. She’s especially looking forward to connecting with iwi Māori to delve into mātauranga of the cryosphere. https://lnkd.in/gFpZy_w5 When asked about her inspiration, Alex shared, “I wanted to be a better environmentalist, and glaciology seemed like a subject that could make a difference. It’s crucial to integrate mātauranga Māori into our understanding of the environment for both sustainability and social change.” And here is a fun fact from Alex: Baby elephant seals love cuddling researchers! Our latest project for the 2024 Australian Museum Eureka Awards, highlighting ground-breaking research on Antarctic ice vulnerability using octopus DNA to study oncoming climate change. 🌊 Our Changing Coast Programme at the 4th Pacific Ocean Climate Change Conference 🌏 The Antarctic Research Centre - Te Puna Pātiotio Changing Coast Programme researchers from Victoria University of Wellington (VUW), and GNS Science attended the 4th Pacific Ocean Climate Change (POCC4) Conference in Apia, Samoa, from May 20-24. This pivotal workshop, co-hosted by VUW, South Pacific Regional Environmental Programme (SPREP), and the National University of Samoa, brought together around 100 climate and ocean change experts and stakeholders from across the Blue Pacific. 📢 Conference Highlights: Keynote Address: Tim Naish spoke following Samoa's Prime Minister, Hon. Fiame Dr. Naomi Mata’afa, outlining the impact of climate change and sea-level rise on the Pacific region. Insightful Talks: Richard Levy, Shannon Bengtson, and Ian Hamling presented on Antarctic ice melt, hazard and risk assessment for Tuvalu, and vertical land motions in sea-level projections. Coastal Adaptation Workshop: Organized by Dao Polsiri, this well-attended session focused on strengthening coastal resilience through science, adaptation tools, and mitigation solutions. 🎙️ Organizing Committee: VUW’s Dame Luamanuvao Winnie Laban, Assistant Vice-Chancellor Pasifika, along with James Renwick and Alberto Costi, played key roles. 🗣️ Key Discussions: Understanding local contexts and nature-based solutions to improve community resilience. Addressing the impacts of vertical land movements on sea-level projections. Community engagement and tackling disinformation, chaired by Rebecca Priestley and Rachel Chrichton-Nunn (SPREP). 🚨 Challenges and Successes: Despite civil unrest in New Caledonia and a gastro bug affecting some of the NZ team, the conference was a resounding success. The event facilitated valuable collaborations and highlighted the resilience and adaptability of Pacific Islanders in the face of climate change.
