On Ross Island, those who leave their nests unattended will be burgled. Adélie penguins make their nests out of rocks and pebbles, and often turn to stealing from others to build the best nest. Voting for these cheeky little penguins in Bird of the Year closes on Sunday! Head to the Forest & Bird website to vote: https://lnkd.in/gcwMKDg

The deep greens of McMurdo Sound sea-ice algae, brilliant glacial blues of Mt Erebus, and every shade of white imaginable – the colours of Antarctica have come to life as they dance across the walls of Leica Galleries in Melbourne and Sydney, all thanks to New Zealand artist Stuart Robertson. Exciting stuff for our friends at the New Zealand Defence Force ✈ We're looking forward to seeing the new fleet in action this season.
NEWS📢 The Chief of Defence Force, Air Marshal Tony Davies, has joined Defence Minister Judith Collins in welcoming the first of our Royal New Zealand Air Force's new C-130J-30 Hercules fleet at a ceremony at Base Auckland this morning. Over the next few months, the five new aircraft will replace the existing C-130H fleet, which has been in service for nearly 60 years. “The additional capabilities the new C-130J fleet brings will open up expanded roles for the aircraft to meet the needs of New Zealand and our partners. For this aircraft, that starts today, with its first task being to introduce the new Hercules to the air bases around the country by moving freight and providing familiarisation for our Air Movements staff." ~ Chief of Defence Force, Air Marshal Tony Davies Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gXq6-KTC #Force4NZ #NZAirForce

Put this one in your calendar - you won't want to miss it 📽 We're excited to share with New Zealand the important mahi that happens in Antarctica, and how it impacts us all here in Aotearoa. Special thanks to New Zealand's Antarctic science community for sharing what they are finding with the support of our teams in Christchurch and Scott Base. Ka pai Patrick Gower! #ClimateChange #Antarctica #ScottBase
Working in Antarctica was insanely difficult but the topic was without doubt the most important I have worked on. “Patrick Gower: On Ice” is a documentary with a simple message at it’s core: Antarctica is melting - and that could be catastrophic for all us. I have total repect for the scientists down there who overcome everything the icy continent throws at them to try and get the answers the world needs. I will be honest. As a journalist, communicating science and climate change has its challenges. But it can be done and has to be done. I know that topics like this can also cause anxiety, and like much of my journalism this documentary includes hope and solutions. I hope this does justice to the people of Antarctica New Zealand and their amazing work down there. 📺 Patrick Gower: On Ice. Three/ThreeNow. A two-part special. Starts, Monday August 12. #Antarctica #ClimateChange #Science #Ice

The Scott Base crew have started installing the University of Otago's Sea Ice Monitoring station, about 3km south-west of Observation Hill. Our winter team installs the probe every year, which builds on a 20-year record of annual sea-ice growth observations in McMurdo Sound. The station gathers data on sea-ice temperatures at 20 discrete depths in the ice, as well as factors affecting the growth of the sea-ice cover over winter, such as air temperature, snow cover thickness and water column properties. Despite being -30ºC, the team couldn't have asked for more perfect conditions. 📸 Catherine Kircher
