We recently completed a comprehensive review of a ground source heat pump (GSHP) system for a project in the South Island. Our analysis identified several opportunities to enhance energy efficiency and user comfort. The initial design, proposed by another consultancy, was based on electric duct heaters. But we saw an opportunity to innovate and create a more sustainable solution. Our recommendation? A packaged rooftop unit that significantly reduced energy consumption. The result? One-third of the energy use and comfortable conditions all year round, whether it’s summer or winter! Making an informed decision about insulation starts with understanding your options. Here in New Zealand, there are six main types of insulation to consider: -Fibreglass/Glass Wool -Mineral Wool/Rock Wool -Wool -Polyester -Polystyrene -Cellulose When selecting the right product for your needs, consider the following key factors: 1)R-Value - This measures the insulation’s ability to resist heat flow. The higher the R-value, the better the thermal performance. It's essential for achieving energy efficiency in your building. 2) Climate Zone - Choose insulation that matches your local climate and Building Code requirements. The right insulation will help maintain comfort and reduce energy costs. Remember, more insulation is not always the way to go. The key is to select the appropriate type and amount for your specific needs, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness without unnecessary expense and the risk of overheating. 3) Installation - Proper installation is crucial. Even the best insulation will underperform if not installed correctly. Ensuring that insulation is installed properly will maximise its effectiveness and your investment.
