After 3 eventful & interesting months of my internship at the Federal Ministry of Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation & Technology (Bundesministerium für Klimaschutz, Umwelt, Energie, Mobilität, Innovation & Technologie) in the Taskforce EU - Innovation and Technology, it is time to look back. The many interesting experiences I had can be summed up in 3 C's:
🌐 Complexity: Working at the intersection of Research, Innovation and Technology not only encompassed a myriad of topics, but the subject matter itself is often times quite technical. My learning curve throughout the last three months was incredibly steep - which made every day exciting.
🤝 Collaboration: Working at the EU-level as well as the national necessarily involves including different stakeholders - be that other ministries, DGs, industry and other groups. Hearing all stakeholders is important - though coordinating all of them is a difficult and often slow process. Nevertheless, input from all stakeholders is crucial to develop tractable, intelligent solutions that benefit everyone in the long-term.
🧠 Competence: The ministry’s work, spanning complex subjects, coordinative efforts, multilateral discussions, and strategic planning, was undoubtedly challenging. However, the Directorate General for Technology and Innovation is fortunate to have an incredibly knowledgeable and competent team. Their expertise played a key role in supporting my steep learning curve. No matter the question I had or how complex a process seemed, the team was always there to offer guidance, making collaboration both enriching and seamless. This allowed me to maximise the benefits from the internship - and of course it allowed me to play an active role in all of the workstreams.
To close, I want to personally thank the people I worked closest with: Brigitte Weiß Falko Loher, Victor Pérez Delgado and Clara Wend - Thank you for making this experience so exciting and memorable!
Next stop: Diplomatische Akademie Wien & Technische Universität Wien for the Master‘s in Environmental Technology and International Affairs.
(On a personal note, if I had to pick a highlight of my internship, it would be the Industry Workshop in Brussels, which we organised together with the European Commission👇 )
