While interning in Ningbo, China, Brandon Jost-Turei (left) threw himself into learning about the local culture - its people, history and economy. 🌏 Recognising a curiosity about his own culture from the United Media Solution team, Brandon also took it upon himself to share more about te ao Māori with his workplace, fostering connections he hopes will lead on to future collaborations. 💻 In this article, Brandon reflects on the three months he spent in China and considers how the experience has impacted his career options: https://lnkd.in/gQAJaup8

How was the Foundation founded? 🌱 At the Asia Summit that was held to celebrate 30 years of the Asia New Zealand Foundation, we wanted to look back on how this all started in 1994. In a video shared on the day, we heard from the influential people that shaped the Foundation into what it is today. 🌟 A big thank you to Rt Hon Sir Don McKinnon, Hon Phillip Burdon and Richard Nottage for taking the time to share with us the origins of the Foundation and their perspective on the last 30 years.

Fantastic to host an induction for our 2024 Leadership Network members over the weekend! 🌟 Leadership exists in many different forms and paths and this was something we saw reflected throughout the day. 💡 The group brings a range of diverse perspectives, lived experiences, and backgrounds and it was great to see everyone connecting over their interests in Asia, sharing their leadership journeys and discussing their passions and motivations. There were lots of dynamic discussions and ideas being sparked, and as was said, it's just the beginning. Congratulations to all our new network members and we look forward to seeing where you take New Zealand’s future engagement with Asia. A big thank you to all the Leadership Network advisory board members who contributed to the day, and to our guest speakers Xavier Breed, Florence Van Dyke and our CE Suzannah Jessep 👏

We're looking forward to taking a group of music programmers and practitioners to Tokyo, Japan next week ✈ While there, they'll be introduced to fellow practitioners and key organisations from the Japanese music sector, visit some cultural sites around the city, and will attend the Tokyo International Music Market (TIMM) 🎶 This tour will enable New Zealand decision-makers in the music industry to extend their Japanese and Asia knowledge of the sector, network and explore opportunities for collaboration, and contribute to the long-term development of audiences for Asian arts in New Zealand. We look forward to sharing content from this group as they go - stay tuned!

🗳🌏 As the US election race enters the home stretch, our Trustee and director of the Centre for Strategic Studies David Capie looks at what a Trump or Harris victory could mean for the Asia region, and New Zealand. “What seemed like a radical approach to trade, tariffs and tech controls when Trump introduced it in 2017 has become American orthodoxy in 2024. But if that points to some continuity,” writes Capie, “Trump’s highly personalised and transactional approach to foreign relations could as easily see him cut deals that undermine the interests of Asian partners.” 📝 Read the final piece in our series covering the US election and its implications for Asia on our website: https://lnkd.in/gqtWekYH

What a turnout for our latest Asia After Five! 🎌 It was fantastic to host an Asia After Five this week in Auckland to hear from artists we've supported to travel to Japan and were immersed in the country's creative ecosystem. We heard from Daniel Belton, Georgie Hill, Theo Macdonald, and Sybille Schlumbom about their time in Japan for residencies, exhibitions and research trips. 📸 Their work spans a range of mediums, from Japanese paper-making to multimedia digital collaborations and it was a real treat to see some of their work that was created while in Japan or was inspired by their time there. Arigatō goazaimasu (thank you) to everyone who joined us for the evening and to all the speakers who shared their experiences. A big thank you to the Auckland Festival of Photography for helping us to host this event!

Tino mīharo (truely amazing) to support and be a part of Ngā Tohu Kaiārahi Pakihi Māori o Aotearoa | Aotearoa Māori Business Leaders Awards last week 🌟 Congratulations to Vanessa Hayes, founder of Tōrere Macadamias, who was awarded the Entrepreneurial Māori Business Leader award. 👏 Vanessa and her team are growing the New Zealand macadamia industry, which has historically relied on imported macadamias. We were pleased to sponsor this award and celebrate with Vanessa on this achievement. Thanks to our former trustee Paul Morgan for presenting the award. Wonderful to be able to celebrate this kaupapa and all the leaders in the room. A special mention goes to our Honorary Adviser, Traci Houpapa, recipient of the Māori Governance Leader Award – ka rawe! Congratulations to all the winners for your inspiring contributions and leadership. The University of Auckland
