At the heart of connecting New Zealand's freight and transport system.

About us

CentrePort is at the heart of connecting New Zealand's freight and transport system. Based in Wellington, we’re more than just a port. We connect importers and exporters from regional New Zealand to international markets by road and rail, handling a wide range of cargo, including containers, logs, bulk fuel, vehicles and other bulk cargo. Our experienced marine services team, equipped with modern tugs and launch vessels, provide expert handling and pilotage for ships calling into Wellington. We also provide infrastructure to support more than 100 cruise ships that visit Wellington each year, and lease wharf facilities to for the Cook Strait ferry services that facilitate over 3,000 journeys each year, over a million passengers, and $20b in freight. Alongside our port in Wellington, we operate a container and bulk cargo aggregation hub in Whanganui, a container hub in Marlborough, and a log hub at Waingawa in the Wairarapa. This enables us to provide a widespread service footprint for our customers.  We’re constantly innovating to provide the best service to our customers, working closely with them to help solve logistics challenges, improve efficiency and minimise costs, through our multi-modal CentreConnect Service. CentrePort is co-owned by the Greater Wellington Regional Council and Horizons Regional Council and governed by a commercial board of experienced business leaders.

  • We enjoyed having the HASANZ crew come for a visit last week and learn more about CentrePort Ltd on a day when we had a cruise ship in port. It was a great opportunity to share what our operating environment is like first hand and demonstrate the critical risks we deal with on a daily basis, which many commented was much broader and complex than expected. #bSafe

We had a wonderful time at our HASANZ Wellington Field Day last week. A huge thank you to all of our participants for joining us and CentrePort Ltd for hosting us 👏 Jason Stapp and the team provided such an engaging and insightful experience. Their depth of knowledge, the variety of their work, and seeing operations up close, including the large cruise ship in port, made for a truly inspiring day. The HASANZ team loved every moment, we hope to do this again in the future!

  • We’ve marked a significant milestone in our commitment to environmental responsibility, with the upgrade and commissioning of a new fire suppression system at Seaview Wharf. Our new system does away with using PFAS, and this shift means we are now ahead of schedule for a regulatory change coming later this year. Fuel facilities, like Seaview Wharf, typically rely on PFAS (Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) foam firefighting systems to combat fires that involve flammable liquids. Our previous system used PFAS foam, which is something often referred to as a ‘forever chemical’ because of its durability and environmental persistence. Because of their impact on the environment, these chemicals are being phased out in New Zealand by the EPA, and from December 2025, their use will be completely banned. Our work on a new system began in mid-2022 and was completed last month, with all legacy foam, contaminated components, and pipework properly disposed of. Our new system uses a fully compliant foam, offering a minimum of 31 minutes of coverage and a range of 50 meters. Check out the video of the new system in action during the commissioning process, on a stunning Wellington day. (Please note that we followed best practice – water was used instead of foam).

  • It's World Sleep Day, which is a timely reminder for our people that good sleep is not just a luxury, but an essential part of maintaining our physical, mental and emotional heath. Lack of sleep impacts significantly on our ability to function while on the job, or travelling to and from work. However, when life gets busy, we know that sleep is often the first thing we sacrifice. Ruth Parris from CentrePort's Marine Team is a fatigue subject matter expert and advocate in our industry, and in 2018 Ruth qualified with a Graduate Certificate in Fatigue Risk Management. "Sleep is one of the key aspects of how we manage the risk of fatigue here at CentrePort. It's something that our people are learning more about as we work through implementing our FRMS (Fatigue Risk Management System)" CentrePort is a 24/7 operation, and last year we opened up a new quiet room here on port. The room has six Lazy-Boy chairs that our people can use to get a power nap in before or after their shift, to help manage their fatigue, and get home safe.

It's the final double day of our cruise season, with Ovation of the Seas and Viking Orion greeted this morning by some classic Wellington wind. We anticipate that from these two ships alone, more than 5,000 additional visitors will have experienced the best Wellington has to offer today. It's been a busy week for cruise - Our GM for People Safety and Marine Megan Elmiger was welcomed aboard the Hanseatic Inspiration for our final plaque exchange of the season, and our Chief Executive Anthony Delaney was honoured to go aboard the Heritage Adventurer to mark the 40th Anniversary of cruise company Heritage Expeditions. Heritage Expeditions was founded by conservationists Rodney and Shirley Russ in 1984. It's still proudly Kiwi, and remains New Zealand’s only family-owned and operated expedition cruise company. The Heritage Adventurer travels to New Zealand’s Subantarctic Islands, into the heart of Antarctica and to New Zealand’s claim on the Ross Dependency. The company offers an opportunity for travellers to experience some of NZ's wildest and most biologically diverse places. This supports passengers becoming conservation ambassadors once they return home, while promoting New Zealand as a cruise destination. Congratulations on your 40th, Heritage Expeditions! 🎉 1. • CentrePort Ltd is really proud of the wahine who work here and the contribution they make to our success. This morning we hosted breakfast with our GM for People, Safety and Marine Megan Elmiger to acknowledge International Women's Day. Our female staff were invited to bring along an item of clothing to donate to Yes for Success / Dress for Success New Zealand - responsible for helping women find employment. They provide a robust support network, professional attire, and development tools to enable women to thrive both professionally and personally. To celebrate, we also invited our staff to shout out the great work their female colleages are doing, through a shared digital whiteboard on Sharepoint created by the talented Deepa G. There's been a fantastic level of support on there so far, with 77 posts made by our people since this morning. Here's to all our port wahine and to the contributions women make to the logistics and maritime industry. #portwomen #IWD

  • Check out this awesome video made here on Port in collaboration with AMLab. The Truck Positioning System (TPS) has been helping our people safely co-ordinate container discharge under our two ship-to-shore cranes. The system has been a crucial part of how we line up our all-electric container trucks under the cranes, and it's a great example of how we've adapted to new ways of working and reduced some of the risks encountered when working around suspended loads. This innovation is a part of why our container operation is so efficient and how we can get more done for our customers. "It does make my job alot easier - you just look to your left.. and once you see green, you know you have hit the spot." - Marika Muatabu, Cargo Handler. Thanks for the support AMLab, Rachel Laurenson for your videography, and our expert staff - Darren, Rohit and Marika for taking the time to explain the ins and outs of how the system works.

AMLab's TPS (Truck Positioning System) is helping container terminal operators around the world to work more efficiently and safely. One of those container terminals, CentrePort Ltd in Wellington, New Zealand has been using AMLab's TPS since 2023. The adoption of AMLab's system has significantly enhanced CentrePort's quay crane cycle times by enabling more efficient landings, outperforming the previous positioning method. In 2024, CentrePort was named as Oceania’s most efficient container port by the World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index. Special thanks to the CentrePort team for their collaboration in creating this video. It showcases how AMLab's TPS has transformed their operations for the better. If you would like to find out more about AMLab's TPS you can head to our website to find out more or contact us by email - https://lnkd.in/gafGwsCu #CentrePort #Containers #ContainerTerminal #STS #QuayCrane #Productivity #Safety #Logistics #Oceania #TPS

  • Best of luck this week to the young sailors competing in the CentrePort Youth Match Racing Regatta, happening right here here in Wellington. CentrePort has been a proud supporter of the regatta for 22 years now, run by Royal Port Nichsolson Yacht Club and Wellington Youth Sailing Trust. All four of the Elliot 6 yachts racing this week are evenly matched, making the competition all about the sailors' skill, determination, and teamwork. Look to the harbour this week to see the talent on display - could any of these sailors be the next America's cup superstars?

  • This week, we had a fantastic tour of the Norwegian Sun with some of our friends from Wellington Zoo Te Nukuao. We usually arrange plaque exchanges for the first call of a new vessel, but eagle-eyed ship spotters will know that the Norwegian Sun has already called into Wellington several times. Because we had so many new Cruise vessels this season, we decided to schedule formalities during the Sun’s final call for the year, rather than its first. Thank you Norwegian Cruise Line for the beautiful ship model you gifted CentrePort, and for treating us and our visitors to a behind the scenes tour of the Sun. We’re proud of the local partnerships we have, and recently, Centreport and Te Nukuao Wellington Zoo signed a memorandum of understanding together. The agreement is all about how we can work together, specifically focused on the donation of used mooring ropes from CentrePort that the Zoo can use to enrich animal habitats. 🐵   Thanks for coming along to visit us Chris Jerram and Sian R.

  • The Love Rimurimu restoration project launched in 2021, thanks to Mountains to Sea Wellington. It’s supported by the Wellington Community Fund, with a mission to restore Wellington harbour’s seaweed forests. 🌿   It’s a collaborative effort, including mana whenua, NIWA, Victoria University of Wellington, and the local community, working together to restore seaweed species and raise awareness of their importance for future generations.   CentrePort is proud to be supporting this project, and our commitment to this cause goes beyond providing financial support. We are contributing resources to ensure better access to marine habitats, and playing our part to safeguard and restore the delicate ecosystems that are vital to the health of our local environment. You can find out more about our plan to support biodiversity in the images below.   Make sure you come along to Seaweed Fest, "New Zealand's first-ever Seaweed festival" which is happening in Wellington between 1-9 March. Click the link below for the full event programme and more details – we’ll see you there!   https://lnkd.in/gZ4gVpBP
