CLC is on a journey of change. 2025 is a year for us to take stock of our achievements and regroup with a fresh focus. We are pleased to partner with KPMG New Zealand to develop two foundational pillars to guide our collective action through 2030: a new CLC Strategy and the supporting Statement of Ambition. With many businesses and government actions aligned to 2030, this is an opportunity to collectively drive meaningful leadership in climate action. It is imperative that CLC continues to work in this space and fosters collective action as a CEO-led organisation. Over the next few months, we will be working collaboratively with our signatories to redefine our strategy to drive climate action in Aotearoa New Zealand. #climate #sustainability #CEOs #change

In some good sustainability news, Christchurch International Airport Limited has taken another significant step in its commitment to operational excellence and sustainability by taking possession of Aotearoa New Zealand’s first electric fire truck. The technology is also the first electric fire truck at any airport in the Southern Hemisphere. Current testing in Europe indicates the new airport fire truck could reduce fire service diesel usage by more than 75 per cent. 🚒🌿 Read about it here: https://lnkd.in/gFAreft9 #electrification #sustainability

The Climate Leaders Coalition, along with Sustainable Business Council NZ, have submitted a joint response to the Climate-related Disclosures (CRD) Consultation. The response supports the CRD scheme – as critical for building a low-emissions, climate-resilient economy. Also included are some possible enhancements. Read more below 👇
SBC and the Climate Leaders Coalition have submitted a joint response to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Climate-related Disclosures (CRD) Consultation. Our submission, shaped by the expertise of members representing around 40% of New Zealand’s GDP, covers the following areas: 🔸 Investment & returns 🔸 NZX listings 🔸 Reporting and thresholds 🔸 Legislative framework 🔸 Director liability 🔸 Parent company Climate Statements 🔸 Timing of review & regime maturity Why does this matter? We believe transparent climate reporting is essential to building a low-emissions, climate-resilient economy. While suggesting some possible enhancements, we support the CRD scheme – and consider it critical for promoting better business and investment decisions through clearer insights on climate risks and opportunities. 🔗 Read our full response here: https://lnkd.in/gfbA26bJ #sustainablebusiness #reporting #emissionsreduction #businessleadership

DLA Piper has published a new insights piece The Power Behind the Long White Cloud, exploring the emergence and impact of data centre investments in New Zealand. The rise of these data centres is transforming the nation’s economy, technological capabilities, and environmental landscape. Insights unpacked by the CLC signatory, include: ➡️ The significant, and growing energy demands of data centres – projected to rival Tiwai Point’s electricity consumption by 2030. ➡️ The South Island offers untapped potential. The cool climate, abundant renewable energy, and available land, make it a prime candidate for future developments, particularly as connectivity infrastructure continues to improve. ➡️ Investors are expecting sustainability concerns around data centre energy and water usage to continue growing, with 70% of respondents saying they expected scrutiny and due diligence to increase over the next two years. Late yesterday the Government announced New Zealand’s second international emissions reduction target under the Paris Agreement, covering the period 2031 to 2035. The headline? The second NDC will reduce emissions by 51 to 55 per cent compared to 2005 levels, by 2035. Read more of the detail in the Ministry for the Environment | Manatū mō te Taiao report, and keep an eye out for more updates👉https://lnkd.in/grE7VPkk
New in the world of climate: New Zealand has announced its second international emissions reduction target under the Paris Agreement. Under the Agreement, each country needs to set targets to show the contribution that they will make towards the goals of the agreement. This target covers the period from 2031 to 2035. Here are the major details of the announcement: NZ’s target is to reduce emissions by 51–55% below 2005 levels by 2035. NZ’s current net emissions are estimated to be around 71 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year (Mt Co2-e). Achieving the target will mean that in 2035 net emissions would be 39 Mt Co2-e to 42 Mt Co2-e. The Paris Agreement has a temperature goal of limiting global temperature increase to well below 2 degrees Celsius. There’s lots to say on our emissions reduction, so keep an eye on our posts over the next few days! Or, to dive in now, you can find the full report here: https://bit.ly/4jAwqOu

The addition of a new JAC electric truck to the KiwiHarvest fleet is helping expand operations, combating food waste and supporting vulnerable communities, while also reducing its carbon footprint. Part-funded by CLC signatory EECA (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority), the project has provided valuable insights on how to successfully deploy this low-emissions technology suited to urban use such as last mile delivery and distribution. Both the Energy and Local Government ministerial portfolios are critical to mitigation and adaptation. The Climate Leaders Coalition looks forward to continuing to work with the Hon Simon Watts in this new capacity.
The Sustainable Business Council and Climate Leaders Coalition welcome the additions of Energy and Local Government to Hon Simon Watts’ stable. Holding ministerial responsibility for complementary portfolios can help allow for climate considerations to be integrated across them. The energy portfolio is critical to Aotearoa New Zealand’s decarbonisation efforts and local government is expected to play a growing role in climate adaptation. Related areas of focus for SBC and CLC include accelerating the uptake of low-emissions freight, unlocking private investment, continuing to strengthen our ETS, taking a long-term view of costs and value-creation, and achieving cross party consensus on key issues and opportunities. We look forward to continuing to work with Minister Watts across these two areas as part of our ongoing engagement with climate policy and action. #sustainablebusiness #emissionsreduction #climateaction

The Climate Change Commission has recently published two important reviews relating to New Zealand's climate architecture – the county's 2050 target and the inclusion of international shipping and aviation emissions. Key recommendations and takeaways for decision makers can be found in a useful summary here: https://lnkd.in/gzkypCix Interested in next steps? The Government has 12 months (until 31 December 2025) to respond to the Target, ISA and EB4 advice provided to the Minister of Climate Change last November.
