  • Have you considered leaving a gift to charity in your will? For those lucky enough to be in a position to help in this way, Community Foundations of Aotearoa New Zealand offer a great way to direct donations to those who need them. Rather than simply giving a lump sum of money to charity, you essentially create an endowment fund that delivers a reliable, long-term income stream to those in need, forever. • The Zespri International AIMS Games are in full swing this week and we were there to watch Te Kura o Tāneatua tee off at Otumoetai Golf course. Te Kura o Tāneatua is just 15 minutes down the road from where our first Craigs office opened in Whakatane 40 years ago, so we visited the kura earlier in the year to learn how we could support their aspirations. There is a huge amount of talent at the school, so we worked with Golf New Zealand to gift Te Kura o Tāneatua 6 sets of golf clubs and $1,500 towards supporting the school to get to the games. Hayley Nelson, General Manager of Craigs’ Tauranga Branch explained how the Tāneatua golf story resonated with the branch. “We loved hearing the story about a local school going over and above to support its students, and using golf as the channel to provide these opportunities is a perfect fit with our ‘Golf for good’ programme.”

Talk of a capital gains tax is back in the headlines. However, similar proposals haven’t gone down well in recent history, politically at least. • Why don't more Kiwis leave a gift to charity in their will? New Zealand came in 10th out of 142 countries on the Global Giving Index, yet only 5% of us leave a gift to charity in our wills. One of the main reasons is many New Zealanders don’t know that leaving a gift to charity in their will is an option. Wills Month is here to change that. In partnership with Community Foundations of Aotearoa New Zealand we want to highlight how it's possible to make impactful change in local communities through #legacygiving. Discover how Paul and Cathy Nicholson's love for their community led them to leave a gift in their wills, ensuring their resources will support the Nelson region for generations to come. • We think our team of investment advisers are the best in the business, but there is always more to learn.   As part of our commitment to continuous learning – ensuring professional development opportunities for our team and an exceptional service experience for our clients – we hosted two-day masterclasses in Auckland, Tauranga and Christchurch.   The events brought together our team of over 180 investment advisers with guest presenters BlackRock, Community Foundations of Aotearoa New Zealand, Deloitte and CHaiMPION AI. Together, we discussed the future of wealth management and the role of the adviser as considerations like wealth transfer, philanthropy, tax awareness and Artificial Intelligence come to the fore.   It was also an opportunity for colleagues from around the country to come together and connect.   Thanks to everyone who took part. We are excited to see these learnings result in great outcomes for our clients.

  • Interest rates are headed lower, which will take the pressure off household budgets and give many homeowners a reprieve. Borrowers are right to feel more optimistic about what’s ahead, but don’t get ahead of yourself just in case they don't come down as much as you think. If the "neutral OCR" is higher than it used to be, the “new normal” for mortgage rates will be too. • September is Wills Month in New Zealand and it highlights the importance of having a will and updating it regularly. We're sharing giving stories from our partners Community Foundations of Aotearoa New Zealand to highlight how it's possible to make impactful change in local communities through #legacygiving. When Janine Evans celebrated her 65th birthday, she chose to create a gift that will outlast the candles on her cake. Inspired by her passion for child welfare and a recent health scare, Janine decided to leave a lasting legacy in her will through the Taranaki Foundation. Her gift will support child protection and the Govett-Brewster Charitable Foundation, ensuring her commitment to future generations lives on. Read her full story here: https://lnkd.in/g7s9Zxxj

Another New Zealand company results season is now in the rear-view mirror. This has certainly been one of the more challenging ones in terms of earnings performance across the board. Likewise, outlook statements have been generally cautious given the economic backdrop continues to be challenging. With one Official Cash Rate (OCR) cut having already occurred, and more expected in the coming months, there is certainly some light emerging at the end of the interest rate tunnel. This will ultimately help support economic growth, and earnings improvement from companies, in time. In this video, Mohandeep Singh, Portfolio Manager, shares some of his highlights.

Gold has been one of the best performing assets these last two years, rising more than 40 per cent and even outpacing the S&P 500 index in the US. Long regarded as a safe-haven asset, it is traditionally favoured by those worried about the health of the global economy and financial system. However, gold has also proven to be a useful diversifier, making it a candidate for inclusion in mainstream investment portfolios. Mark Lister discusses some of the things that can make gold prices rise and fall, then considers its investment credentials.
