This month, we were proud to be part of Auckland Design Week, hosting an NZIA-accredited CPD (Continuing Professional Development) breakfast at our Auckland Experience Centre. Bringing together architects and designers, we explored ‘Collaborative Responsibility: Reducing Carbon Footprint through Sustainable Appliance Choices in Residential Environments’—a conversation on how thoughtful design can drive meaningful change. At Fisher & Paykel, design isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating solutions that help shape a more sustainable future. Auckland Design Week #DesignForAChangingWorld

For eight years, Fisher & Paykel has been proud to partner with The Local Project in showcasing bespoke kitchens and interiors that exude luxury and seamlessly integrate our appliances to articulate their design vision. We believe in the power of great design to inspire fresh ideas and spark conversations that lead to innovation. So last week, it was a privilege to join The Local Project alongside a dynamic group of founders and creatives in property, design, fashion, and architecture, for a chance to connect with these visionaries of their industry on the future of design. #FisherPaykel #TheLocalProject

Natasha Markham, the director of architecture studio MAUD, renovated her own heritage villa with contemporary family living in mind. As well as adding a new two storey addition at the rear, the existing villa required extensive remedial work, and yet, the original intent of these rooms remains. It now supports a fluidity of movement between zones and spaces for its residents to come together as a family or with extended groups of friends, along with spaces for rest and retreat. A pavilion-style home located on a hillside in Los Angeles’ Sherman Oaks neighbourhood, the Ridge Residence was designed by its owners, architects Peggy Hsu and Chris McCullough, of the firm Hsu McCullough, to embrace the surrounding topography while offering seclusion from the outside world. While the rear of the property connects to nature, the street-facing façade creates privacy and filters the sometimes-harsh Californian sun with a large timber-batten brise soleil — a screen of vertical wood blades that control the solar heat and sunlight that enters the home. We’re delighted to announce that Fisher & Paykel’s London Experience Centre has received the Editor’s Choice Award at the Designerati Awards 2024. This prestigious UK event celebrates the best in design and innovation, recognising our London Experience Centre for its unique combination of creativity and functionality. Our ‘Designed in New Zealand’ ethos, which informs the design thinking at each of our experience centres, prioritises architecture that has meaningful connections to place and is respectful of culture, history and materials. This ethos has been purposefully and beautifully translated to the Experience Centre’s London setting. Throughout the London Experience Centre, every interaction has been crafted to resonate with who we are and every physical element is carefully considered — from the offering of kawakawa tea upon entry, to the descent of a discreet sculptural spiral stair into a luxurious vaulted space. A hidden kitchen, where guests are welcomed by a bowler-hatted sculpture by Michael Parekōwhai, New Zealand’s foremost living artist. A special thank you to Designerati for this honour, and to everyone who helped bring our vision to life. In mid-October 2024, Fisher & Paykel welcomed a delegation of leading architects and designers from China. Their four-day visit traversed culture, landscape and architecture, and was curated to provide an understanding of ‘Designed in Aotearoa New Zealand’—and the ways this concept influences the way we live, the buildings we occupy, and the things we design from here in Aotearoa. Day one of the tour began at the Auckland War Memorial Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, with a wonderful pōwhiri and an introduction to the museum’s tāonga. Day two encompassed Auckland’s wild West Coast, from the dramatic heights of Piha to KareKare via Mercer Bay loop, to the refinement of Parihoa Farm, designed by Patterson Associates, a chance for our guests to experience both nature’s power and closeness and an exceptional architecture. Day three of our tour took us to the Auckland Experience Centre, a considered piece of design where the influence of the natural elements can be read in every surface, and kitchens created with our luxury design partners Boffi, Arclinea and Henrybuilt showcase the ways our unique product styles support varied aesthetic outcomes. Our kitchen planning workshops yielded insights into bespoke integration, and the relationship between appliance performance and Mastery of Temperature. No tour of Tāmaki Makaurau is complete without a visit to Waiheke Island. And that’s where our fourth and final day took us. From the black-sand west to the white-sand east, our visitors’ final memory was Mawhiti Estate, designed by Stevens Lawson Architects with a clear commitment to the craft of timber evident throughout the gable-roofed spaces. #fisherpaykel

Human-centred design is at the heart of who we are at Fisher & Paykel, and the beautiful ethos behind Architects not Architecture is one that resonates deeply with us. For those reasons, we were delighted to support the AnA London 2024 Talks at the Royal Academy of Arts recently. The evening was a true celebration of the creative spirit, with speakers Sumita Singha OBE from Ecological Architects, Ole Sheeren of Büro Ole Scheeren, and Chris Precht of Studio Precht. Exploring their experiences and influences with honesty, humour, and vulnerability, they shared a unique insight into the person, rather than the project, who has shaped our world. On Australia’s Gold Coast, the Mermaid Beach House is an extensive renovation of an existing house built in the 1980s. Now a contemporary family home that pays homage to its stunning location steps from the Pacific Ocean, it is distinguished by intelligent planning and thoughtful material combinations. Working within the limitations of the 40-year-old building brought both challenges and opportunities to the design process. The resulting scope focused on creating a visual cohesion between the house’s materials, and maximising the physical and visual connection to the beach through a series of minor yet impactful changes to the layout.
