I had an excellent day visiting customers in #Northland with Will Newall showing off the HP SitePrint with Leica iCON technology. The people watching the demo immediately realised the benefits of having the detailed CAD design plan printed directly onto the floor, instead of fighting paper PDF printouts in the wind and rain! Accurately printed lines (with text annotations) indicate all the timber framing with frame reference information on the slab, this enables the frames to arrive and be positioned and fixed EXACTLY where the design shows, with zero errors. Great to catch up with Operators Trent and Juan at James Lux Developments. Metric Surveying just completed our first real world project with the HP Site Print. Cassidy Construction have a project that demanded very detailed and accurate layout to assist in the fit out. With curved walls, countless penetrations and varying wall types the site print was the tool for the job. We did QA checks on the setout with a second total station and found impressive results around +/-3mm 1 floor down, 2 to go! This semester I had the pleasure of being a course Lecturer alongside Cheng Zhang on ‘Civil 305: Construction Informatics’ at the School of Engineering, University of Auckland.   This feels a bit like a nerdy dream come true! It was fascinating being able to go through the academic literature and then apply my experience as context.   Deciding what the basics of Reality Capture are and its relevance to the AEC industry was difficult. Reality Capture is not always 'point and shoot'😝! Here is an overview of some of the topics covered: -         What is Reality Capture? -         Reality Capture pros and cons -         Capture methodologies (Photogrammetry, TLS, MLS, ALS etc.) -         Reality capture applications / use cases -         Point Clouds -         Coordinate Systems -         Reality Capture and Surveying -         Digital deliverables (incl. digital twins – and debates on what that actually means!) -         Data accuracy (relative, absolute, fit for purpose etc.) -         AI and reality capture (development of SLAM, classification algorithms, automated Scan-to-BIM extraction workflows etc.)   Global Survey exposes me to a wide variety of applications. Every day, through my clients, I see and learn more unique and interesting applications for Reality Capture technology!
