Making All Kiwi Homes Healthier.

About us

HRV was founded in 2003 by two Kiwi entrepreneurs, who were passionate about improving the state of NZ homes. They saw that ventilation could make a big difference to the damp, dripping homes that many New Zealanders lived in – and it all went from there. We introduced the great benefits of home ventilation to kiwi homeowners, and our market-leading products quickly became recognised as the go-to for families wanting relief from damp, unhealthy homes, especially when health issues such as asthma and allergies were part of the problem. Over the years we’ve developed our healthy thinking even further. We believe that with a country as pure as ours there’s no excuse for 1/3 of all kiwi homes to have a serious mould and damp issue. As for our drinking water, it’s far from wholesome either, with many unhealthy “added extras” like chlorine and heavy metals in the mix. So, we’ve made it our mission to make the air and water inside New Zealand homes as healthy as it is outside. We call it, the invironment(TM). With a family of over 180,000 customers, we have Kiwi's whole homes covered with Ventilation, Heating, Cooling, Water Filtration, Window solutions and Solar Technology. Our nationwide team of over 400 employees work hard to make our products and service the best you can find. We must be doing something right as our HRV Ventilation solutions have been given a Sensitive Choice accreditation, and we work closely with Allergy NZ too, to help raise awareness and reduce the triggers for respiratory illnesses. That fresh HRV thinking has paid off for many families around New Zealand, and we’re not stopping anytime soon.

Mānawatia a Matariki! ✨ The theme for Matariki 2024 is Matariki whetū heri kai – Matariki, the bringer of food. So, we marked the occasion at HRV by bringing the team together for shared kai before heading off for the long weekend. Midwinter is an important time to us at HRV, because we know it’s when people not lucky enough to live in a kainga hauora / healthy home feel it most. Cold, mould and condensation can get in the way of enjoying spending time at home with whānau. We’re taking the weekend off now, but we look forward to working with you in the coming year to tackle the home health problems facing so many in Aotearoa.

Wow it’s tough out there. It feels like every day we see things in the news, at the supermarket checkouts and the petrol pumps that have people worried about their family finances. This week’s news is full of flat house prices and likely ACC levy increases. Last week it was people skipping dental appointments. Next week, who knows? I get that tough economic times can lead to some very sensible belt-tightening. What breaks my heart is when that impacts our health, and our children’s health. We’re heading into the coldest, dampest part of winter. We all know now that New Zealand homes aren’t well prepared for that. Kiwi homes’ insulation, heating and ventilation just aren’t good enough, and that means cold damp homes and the health issues that come with them. The problems are obvious. The solutions are too! We know that home ventilation systems reduce moisture and prevent the conditions that mould needs to grow. That’s why we’re doing our bit here at HRV to make sure Kiwi families aren’t putting their home health on hold. This winter, you’ll see no price increases on new HRV home ventilation systems. Not one dollar (excludes upgrades). And you will see extra deals like this month’s $169 saving on HRV home ventilation systems, to help reduce the cost of home and family health. Winter colds and sniffles are one thing – I’m home with one as I’m writing this, but long-lasting preventable impacts on our families’ health are quite another. That’s why we’re doing what we can to make sure no one has to put their home health on hold. If you want a free home assessment, give us a call on 0800478123

Recently a two-unit home opposite ours was bought by a builder and promptly demolished, and now 5 new town houses are being built. I’ve taken some time to chat to the builder as recently, new building codes were introduced regarding insulation, and I obviously have a keen interest in the ventilation side of things. It’s clear that as Kiwi’s, our rules around the Healthy Home triangle of Insulation, Heating and Ventilation still needs a lot of work! We are great at insulation, but very quiet, almost blasé about heating and ventilation. The truth is, there’s no point in building thousands of new homes if they just make people sick. And they are. And unless we change something quickly, they will continue to do so. You’d think that brand new Kiwi homes, with insulation in the roof and walls, and tightly fitting aluminium joinery would provide great living environments. Think again. Imagine a plastic lunch box with a sealed lid. That’s your brand-new house. Pop your lunch in there. That’s you and your family, cooking, showering, washing clothes and creating moisture. Now watch what forms on that clear plastic lid. Moisture, and lots of it. If any home isn’t properly ventilated, then that’s what’s going to happen. Our Unitec research shows that this quickly leads to mould growth too. You’ve now got two triggers for asthma and other respiratory diseases right there in your brand-new home. Add insufficient heating and your new home is a ticking health time bomb. Our government is in the middle of shaking up social housing, and that’s probably a good thing. But at HRV, we believe every New Zealander deserves more than just a home – they deserve a drier, warmer, healthier one. A healthy home! We’ve spent 20 years making that happen one home and one family at a time, but to keep moving that needle it needs to happen at scale. So, if you’re involved in social housing, or have a residential building project and you’re wanting to ensure it is warm, dry and healthy for your homeowners, come and chat with me – we’re here to help. I would love to hear from you - reach out to me on LinkedIn or you can email me at norman.woods@hrv.co.nz #housing #healthyhomes #kaingaora #MHUD

When I joined HRV, I thought I was going to be in the ventilation and heating business……. I was so wrong! At HRV its very different! People don’t buy ventilation systems from us. They don’t buy heat pumps, and they don’t buy water filtration systems - they are buying healthy homes. All too often in New Zealand, condensation, moisture, mould, and airborne allergens in homes have an unnecessarily high impact on the health of the inhabitants, particularly our children. HRV’s purpose of ‘Making all Kiwi homes healthier’ is the job I’m really here for! Creating drier, warmer, healthier homes filled with fresh, filtered air, and making homes healthier is what we do. With half a million Kiwis living in homes with HRV Ventilation systems; we have plenty of first-hand experience of the difference we can make. However, we wanted scientific proof of what we had learnt, so we partnered with Unitec to study the effectiveness of HRV home ventilation. The first study showed that homes with HRV ventilation had reductions in humidity, and the homeowners saw how their new home ventilation helped to prevent mould over a period of time. Levels of particulate matter–dust, pollen, and mould spores–and carbon dioxide all dropped when HRV home ventilation was installed. That first round was a great start, and we now have more research under way to tell us how we can do an even better job of making all Kiwi homes healthier. Yes, we sell great ventilation and heating solutions, but I am even prouder that we sell healthier homes in New Zealand. That’s worth getting up for in the morning. #healthy homes #ventilation #HVAC #health #asthma #respiratorydisease #allergies

Happy Pink Shirt Day! Today, our HRV teams proudly wore pink to stand against bullying and promote kindness and inclusion. Pink Shirt Day is an annual event to raise awareness around bullying. Did you know 91.3% of workers have experienced at least one form of bullying in the past 12 months? Frequently bullied workers are at least 10 times more likely to face job burnout, anxiety, or depression. It's crucial to support each other and create an inclusive workplace every day! 💗 #PinkShirtDay #Inclusion #Diversity #Kindness #HRV

As Group General Manager for HRV, one of the stats that consistently stands out for me is that one in eight Kiwi kids has asthma. I was thinking about that while driving to work this morning. I was behind a school bus with maybe 40 or 50 kids on it. Odds on, that means five or six of them live with asthma. Imagine being a kid and having to put up with shortness of breath, chest pain, and coughing so much you can’t sleep. You see, my wife and daughter are asthma sufferers, and currently my 3-year-old grandson has more than his fair share if bronchial related sick days. So I know firsthand how scary this can be, and that something needs to be done about it, urgently! I’m happy to say that our team at HRV is on it, as ‘Making all Kiwi homes healthier’ is our purpose, the reason we come to work each day. This May, HRV will give $100 from every new ventilation system sold (apart from upgrades and our Lite offering) to the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ. They’ll use that money to train New Zealand health professionals on asthma and COPD, so all New Zealanders with asthma have better access to the healthcare they need to stay healthy. HRV home ventilation is one way we’re helping, by creating drier, warmer, healthier homes. Not everyone lives in an HRV home though. So I hope this donation will help all Kiwis with asthma – and maybe those five or six kids on the bus.
