Promoting and shaping a responsive and sustainable insurance industry to safeguard New Zealand.
About us
Since 1895, The Insurance Council of New Zealand Te Kāhui Inihua o Aotearoa (ICNZ) has played an active role in representing the general (not health and life) insurance industry, informing and educating consumers about key insurance issues and risks. Our mission is to promote and shape a responsive and sustainable insurance industry to safeguard New Zealand, and adhere to the Fair Insurance Code. ICNZ’s te reo name – Te Kāhui Inihua o Aotearoa – translates to ‘the insurance association of New Zealand’. In September 2019, the ICNZ launched the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) - New Zealand’s first integrated initiative to target insurance fraud through detection and education. All of our members are also members of the IFB. We have almost 30 members who collectively write more than 95 percent of all fire and general insurance in New Zealand and insure over half a trillion dollars’ worth of New Zealand’s assets and liabilities.

ICNZ and our counterparts in the UK, Canada, and Australia are together calling for meaningful action to help reduce the risk on lives, property and communities from climate related extreme weather. Ahead of this week’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) later this week, we have written to our respective Prime Ministers to highlight the key issues around the challenge and opportunity of climate adaptation and the protection gap which could emerge if policies and markets fail to react to climatic changes and severe weather events. We are committed to working together with our Government and across jurisdictions to proactively reduce natural hazard risks and future proof our nations against climate changes. By reducing the protection gap we keep communities safe, reduce the costs to taxpayers and ratepayers and maintain insurance capacity and affordability. Spring winds can cause extensive damage to properties. It can be common to claim for fallen trees 🌲 and branches after severe weather, for the damage they can cause to houses 🏡 and guttering, fences, cars and neighbouring properties. Maritime New Zealand shares some life saving tips. Males over 45 years old are the most at risk of serious harm (including death) on the water. Lack of knowledge and complacency about your boat (rōnihi) 🚤 and equipment before you head out on the water (moana) are key factors. ✅ check your lifejackets, make sure there is no damage and they are still fit for purpose. ✅ check expiry dates on key pieces of equipment. ✅ check all batteries are fully charged, and you have a radio, ropes and flares. ✅ salty water can speed up the degradation process of items - check for wear and tear.
