Meet Sarah Butler! Desktop Assessor at Tower 👋 "My journey with Tower began almost eight years ago. I had moved back to New Zealand and spent the first few weeks flipping a house, and once the renovation was complete, it left me with a lot of spare time. Just as I began to consider my next step, the Kaikoura Earthquake happened, so I took on a role as Claims Handler for the Kaikoura earthquake team. I had been in the claims role for a few months but my goal had always been to work as an Assessor. My interest came from my renovation experience, although I didn’t think I had the qualifications as everyone else were ex-builders. I underestimated myself, primarily because the team were different age and gender to me, and I didn’t know if I would fit the role. Keith McDonald (Home Assessing QA Manager), an almost stranger at the time, had more confidence in my abilities than I did. Unbeknownst to me, he had recommended me for an assessing role to the House Assessing Manager, which was Ross Haliday at the time. I ended up going for a coffee with Ross (now Head of Assessing Investigations & Supply Chain), he was really supportive and offered me a role on the spot. I can safely say that was a huge turning point in my life. I now look at everything and consider if I am capable based on my skills, rather than comparing my age, gender, experience of others and letting that determine my capability. My life has taken so many twists and turns since I started with Tower, and it feels like they have always gone out of their way to make sure that I can continue to be part of the team here. It has made me feel very valued, in a way that is hard to put into words. It encourages me to show up as the best employee that I can be. Outside of work, I love renovating houses and sharing my story on social media. I use my platforms to encourage women to give DIY tasks a go and to not be discouraged from trying new things on their own. We are capable of anything we can put our minds to!" #TowerNZ #TowerPacific #insurance #progressbodly

Talofa lava! The #CHOGM2024 Business Forum in beautiful Apia was a fulsome two days of bringing together ideas and solutions from across the The Commonwealth to address the challenges facing our nations – climate change, economic development and inequalities. As silver sponsor, the Tower Insurance team shared what we’re doing to help improve resilience in Pacific island nations through parametric insurance and growing local job opportunities and careers. It was also a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time with our fantastic Samoa team in person. Thanks to Joanne Rasmussen, Ray Tonumaipe'a, and Zach Suisala for your warm talimalo Samoa. Some facts from the conference that stood out for me: 🌀The Commonwealth represents 2.5 billion people, 65% of whom are under the age of 30 (that’s a third of the world's population!). 🌀Commonwealth countries currently trade 20% more with each other than with non-members. 🌀Commonwealth GDP is $14.2 trillion, set to rise to $20 trillion by 2029 With shared history, similar business, regulatory and legal practices further trade could increase this. 🌀$1.5b in the world don’t have access to a formal bank account. Unlocking digital payments systems is key for economic development, reducing corruption and increasing trust for citizens and capital markets. 🌀Oceans make up 96% of our Pacific environment, there’s an opportunity to capitalize on this “blue economy”, but only if we protect it…

Coming to you live from Samoa, at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Business Forum! “We are delighted to have Tower as a supporter of the Commonwealth Business Forum 2024.” - Lord Marland, Chairman, Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC). “Dynamic and innovative insurance models are critical for the Commonwealth as it looks to build resilience, but in the Pacific and for Small Island States is essential. “We are delighted to have a company so plugged into the region commit to the Business Forum, and to lead the conversation in how technology and data can be harnessed to improve the economic resilience of our Commonwealth community.” Insurance is an absolutely critical tool for the resilience of NZ and Pacific communities. As a business with a 150-year history in the Pacific and 155 years in NZ, we are thrilled to be attending and supporting CHOGM 2024, with the CWEIC. Today, Tower CEO Blair Turnbull will feature on a tech and innovation panel discussion, you can watch live at 4pm here https://lnkd.in/gdnANNdP Tower Chief Underwriting Officer Ronald Mudaliar and Head of Pacific Retail Distribution Joanne Rasmussen will also take part in a roundtable discussion today, on unlocking green investment and risk mitigation. Ron will then feature on a second roundtable on leadership in island nations. We’ll be sharing updates from CHOGM over the next few days and are proud to be flying the Kiwi and Pacific flag with Commonwealth leaders. #TowerNZ #TowerPacific #insurance #CHOGM #CHOGM2024 #Commonwealth #CWEIC

Tower was proud to co-host a fantastic sustainability innovation event with global and New Zealand thought leaders Henk Rogers, Amanda Ellis, Rod Drury, Carmen Vicelich, Steve Jurkovich and our own Blair Turnbull. It was particularly inspiring to hear Henk’s story, from global entrepreneur securing the global rights to the Tetris game and negotiating its inclusion in the first Game Boy, to clean energy visionary, who has dedicated the past decade to ending the use of carbon-based fuels. As founder of the Blue Planet Foundation, Henk led Hawaii to become the first US state with a law requiring 100% renewable electricity by 2045 – a goal now adopted by over 20 other US states and territories. Full credit to Rod for making the most of his “funemployment”, by driving a big vision for New Zealand – low-cost renewable energy and a new line of revenue for NZ’s economy: AI computation. Amanda Ellis, a woman who wears many hats, shared her insights into the power of global partnerships, indigenous wisdom and intergenerational collaboration to create positive change. A former NZ Ambassador to the UN, Amanda holds governance roles in many incredible organisations focused on climate action, sustainable development, and women's economic empowerment & leadership. Inspiring stuff. Steve spoke passionately on Kiwibank’s sustainability journey and the power of “performance through purpose”. We are pleased to partner with an organisation that shares similar values. And Blair shared the ways Tower is investing in Pacific talent, economic development and climate change resilience with our 300-strong team in Suva and our burgeoning parametric insurance offering. Thank you to Carmen and the team at Generate Zero for making this happen!
