In New Zealand's investment landscape, "responsible" and "ethical" have become buzzwords used to promote most funds. But what do they really mean in practice? The truth is, there's a vast spectrum - from funds that merely scratch the surface of ethical considerations to those that truly embed strong ethical principles in their core. The lack of clear standards for responsible or ethical investing has led to a troubling trend of exaggeration and misleading claims. It's no surprise that our annual surveys consistently show more than half of the public worrying about 'greenwashing'. That's why we've developed the Mindful Funds criteria. Our aim is to set a high bar for ethical investing, based on an objective analysis of portfolios and practices, in order to identify the funds that can back up their marketing claims with concrete action. We recognise that ethical investing means different things to different people. So, we've broken down our criteria into four key areas that we believe matter most: - How do the funds avoid harm?  - How do the funds use active ownership to raise standards? - How do the funds include companies with a more positive social and environmental impact? - How does the fund and provider demonstrate ethical conduct and better member outcomes? It's about moving beyond lip service and towards meaningful action that aligns with our values as New Zealanders. Six years ago, Barry Coates set out on a mission to bring financial transparency to New Zealand. What began as three part-timers with a big idea has blossomed into a movement, with now over 400,000 New Zealanders using our tool to understand the impact of their investments. New Zealand's Ethical Investing movement is coming of age! In boardrooms and living rooms alike a powerful message is resonating: our investments have the potential to shape the world. Together, we're leading a charge towards investments that don't harm people, the planet or animals. We've been tracking KiwiSaver and managed funds investments over the past six years. The data reveals an encouraging trend: unethical investments are on the decline as Kiwis care more than ever about their investments not causing harm. Notable Reductions in Unethical Investments: 74% fall in tobacco products 69% decrease in pornography and adult entertainment 33% reduction in alcohol-related investments 31% decline in weapons funding 29% drop in investments linked to animal cruelty 20% decrease in gambling-related investments 16% fall in investments causing environmental damage It's proof that when we come together, we can make a difference. Over 400,000 New Zealanders have now taken the time to examine their funds on our website, showing the growing awareness and commitment to ethical investing across the country.
