About us

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Ngāi Tahu are the iwi comprised of Ngāi Tahu whānui; that is, the collective of the individuals who descend from the five primary hapū of Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Māmoe and Waitaha, namely Kāti Kurī, Ngāti Irakehu, Kāti Huirapa, Ngāi Tūāhuriri and Ngāi Te Ruahikihiki. Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu was established by the Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Act 1996 and services the tribe's statutory rights and ensures that the benefits of the Settlement are enjoyed by Ngāi Tahu whānui now and in the future. Throughout the South Island there are 18 local rūnanga. An elected representative from each of rūnanga makes up Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, the governing body overseeing the tribe's activities.

The joint campaign by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and AF8 [Alpine Fault magnitude 8], ‘Kauraka e mataku, kia takatū! – Don’t be scared, be prepared!’ has won the Emergency Media and Public Affairs (EMPA) Awards for Excellence in Emergency Communications in the Readiness and Resilience Category.   The award celebrates the innovative approach taken by the campaign, which combines Mātauranga Māori, traditional Ngāi Tahu creation stories, and scientific knowledge to raise awareness and drive action towards emergency readiness. The centrepiece of the campaign is a video that highlights the journey of a Ngāi Tahu whānau to Te Tai Poutini (West Coast), where they learn about the Alpine Fault and how to prepare for the potential impacts of a magnitude 8+ earthquake.   Senior Advisor Whānau & Emergency Response Keela Atkinson-Cranwell, AF8 Programme Manager Alice Lake-Hammond, and Senior Communications Advisor Crisselda De Leon-Singson were in attendance to receive the award.   Check out the campaign video here https://lnkd.in/gzkmKU2B

Poutini Ngāi Tahu (West Coast hapū) is welcoming the return of 60 kilograms of pounamu seized at the border by Customs after two illegal export attempts.   Twelve pieces of pounamu weighing about 50 kilograms were intercepted at Auckland Airport in a suitcase in October 2016. A parcel containing two pounamu stones weighing around 10 kilograms was also seized at the International Mail Centre in August 2022. Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Waewae Chair Francois Tumahai welcomed its return at a special ceremony held at Arahura Marae in Hokitika earlier today. “We’re pleased to have our pounamu back. Pounamu is part of who we are as Poutini Ngāi Tahu. Our tamariki are raised with an understanding of its significance and the knowledge of how to find and protect this taonga.” Pounamu has been a treasured taonga for our iwi for hundreds of years. The ownership of pounamu was officially returned to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu in 1997 through the Ngāi Tahu (Pounamu Vesting) Act and Francois Tumahai says all carvers and purchasers of pounamu should ensure its authenticity. “Together, we can stop the illegal trade of pounamu. Please check to make sure any pounamu you buy carries a mark of authenticity and a unique traceability code from Ngāi Tahu Pounamu. This guarantees the seller is licensed and the stone has not been stolen. “When you enter this code on the Ngāi Tahu Pounamu website it identifies the origin and whakapapa of the stone and tells you who the artist was that carved it. With this knowledge you can be reassured the stone has been treated according to our customs and carved with care.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/guQV84PF For more information on the origins of taonga pounamu, visit ngaitahupounamu.com.

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Kaiwhakahaere Justin Tipa has written an opinion piece about the Treaty Principles Bill. "If we cut right to the heart of why Māori are so incensed by the Coalition Government’s Treaty Principles Bill, it comes down to rangatiratanga. One of ACT’s original treaty principle ‘definitions’ suggested that ‘tino rangatiratanga’ applies to individual citizens and boils down to a protection of property rights. This was a deliberate attempt to define rangatiratanga out of existence." https://lnkd.in/gtR8_bBm
