Fantastic to see our recently signed Memorandum of Understanding with Lincoln University (NZ) in action yesterday with our Strategy and Policy Team delivering a guest lecture on campus. Their lecture covered our upcoming Area Plans for Waikirikiri Selwyn and challenged the students to work in groups and look at the development of Eastern Selwyn over the next 30 years. This mahi ties in with our long-term strategic approach, Waikirikiri Ki Tua Future Selwyn which we recently had open for consultation with our community.
It was a great pleasure to have the Selwyn District Council Strategy and Policy team join us at Lincoln University (NZ) yesterday to deliver a guest lecture on spatial planning. This lecture supports my professional practice course and the amazing project our Environmental Management and Planning students are undertaking. In this project, the students, working in groups, take on the role of consultants to develop a strategic spatial plan to enhance the sustainable development of Eastern Selwyn over the next 30 years. Ben Baird (Head of Strategy and Policy), George Sariak (Strategy Team Lead), and Ryan Mayes (Eastern Selwyn Spatial Lead) delivered a well-structured lecture with helpful content, covering everything from theoretical and conceptual understanding of spatial planning to practical case examples. The Selwyn District Council Strategy and Policy team has been supportive of the project from the beginning, starting with the assignment brief, and they remain committed to providing support throughout. This collaboration further strengthens the recent MoU between Lincoln University (NZ) and Selwyn District Council. As we progress with the project, we look forward to welcoming you back in the future and continuing to learn from your valuable experiences.

In celebration of Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu – National Volunteer Week, we want to say thank you to all our volunteers for your efforts in supporting our community. Our Civil Defence Volunteers are just a few of the hundreds of volunteers who do amazing work in our community. In Selwyn, we have over 240 Civil Defence community volunteers split across 30 teams, an Emergency Support Team of 26 volunteers and a Response Team (NZRT21) of 35 volunteers. We talked to four volunteers about why they love what they do.
