A new tool has launched called the The Inclusive Code. It has been designed to help reshape the New Zealand advertising industry in a co-designed collaboration led by Special New Zealand. The tool aims to challenge marketers to think differently about disability, identifying and overcoming exclusionary practices that are often well-intentioned but problematic. With 25% of New Zealanders being disabled, the advertising landscape doesn’t currently reflect this reality. Despite $3.259 billion being spent on advertising in 2023, only 1% of primetime ads include the disabled community. The Inclusive Code was co-created over two years alongside eight experts with lived experience of disability and working in the marketing industry. Co-creators include disability advocates Grace Stratton, CEO of All is for All, and Fonoti Pati Umaga QSM, Co-Chair of Mana Pasefika Disabled Peoples Organisation. • This week is Dyspraxia Awareness Week. It is estimated that around 5-6% of the population has Dyspraxia, (also known as Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)). Dyspraxia is a neurodivergence that can impact motor skills, coordination, and daily tasks like time management and personal organisation. Dyspraxic people are also often creative 'outside of the box' thinkers, have great attention to detail, are empathetic, determined and resilient. As we raise awareness this week, we'd love to hear from you: Do you or someone in your workplace have experience with Dyspraxia? What support has made a difference? Join us to learn how to better support neurodivergent individuals in your workplace. #DyspraxiaAwareness #Neurodiversity #InclusiveWorkplace #DCD

We've launched our inaugural Disability Inclusion Action Plan - deeply influenced by the voices of our people, our approach to disability inclusion transcends checkboxes and metrics; it’s about cultivating a culture where everyone feels welcome, supported, and free to be themselves. We partnered with Get Skilled Access (GSA), founded by nib ambassador and Chief Motivation Officer, Dylan Alcott to create a plan that articulates our commitment to challenging assumptions, amplifying voices, and celebrating the diverse abilities each person brings. This plan isn’t just a collection of initiatives; it’s a reflection of our unwavering commitment to integrating inclusion into the very fabric of our organisation. We see this as an ongoing journey—one that will require us to be relentless in our pursuit of workplace equity for people living with disabilities and those who are neurodiverse. #DisabilityInclusion #DIAP #Diversity #Inclusion #GSA #DylanAlcott #nib #EquityInTheWorkplace

  • Rachael Parkinson-Turner was a panellist yesterday at this fantastic event ‘Making Workplaces Accessible’ hosted by Gender At Work Community. We are grateful for the opportunity to kōrero and share knowledge and experiences on this vital subject, and felt privileged to be a part of a panel of such incredible leaders and advocates. The panelists each received a beautiful gift box created by SpecialGifts which was very thoughtful and generous. We hope to continue to engage in more discussions like this in the future.

🌟 Reflecting on our 'Making Workplaces Accessible' lunch event yesterday 🌟 A heartfelt thank you to our incredible speakers — Dr Huhana Hickey MNZM PHD, Pieta Bouma, and Rachael Parkinson-Turner — and our fantastic facilitator, Anna Beard. Your leadership and advocacy have had a profound impact on so many, and you have inspired us to reimagine accessibility in the workplace and society. 💡 Some key takeaways from the session: - Disability isn’t a deficit but a taonga — let's adopt an empowerment model. - 100% of people have needs, including access needs, and these needs will inevitably change over time. - People with disabilities are some of the best problem solvers, show incredible perseverance, and are as productive or more productive than non-disabled people. - 71% of people leave a website if it's not accessible. - With workplace inclusion, remember it's about progress not perfection. Accessibility benefits everyone, and it's possible for every voice to be heard, valued, and uplifted in workplaces. A shout out to SpecialGifts for providing us with beautiful gift boxes showcasing disabled individuals' unique skills and products. 🎁 #accessibility #disabilityinclusion #workplacediversity #genderatwork

We are proud to have received the Accessibility Tick from the New Zealand Disability Employers' Network ✅ One in four people in New Zealand identify as having a disability or are neurodiverse, but are often scared to tell their employer for fear of being disadvantaged. This mark provides an assurance that an employer has the tools to support and provide accessibility options for those with disabilities or differences like neurodiversity. It reflects our commitment to provide a working environment that breaks down social barriers and changes attitudes. Being awarded the ‘tick’ is just the beginning of our journey and each year we will assess and review our progress to become more inclusive and accessible. #Accessibility #Inclusive #Diversity #Employment #NZ
