RNZ has released an external assessment of its content as part of a commitment to regularly review its output against its editorial policy. RNZ Chief Executive and Editor-in-Chief Paul Thompson said it was important these assessments were made public. “We want everyone to understand the steps we are taking as a public media organisation to ensure our work is always underpinned by fairness, accuracy, independence, respect, decency and diversity. This is a continuous process of improvement and review, and independent audits such as these allow for objective assessments of our work.” The assessment, undertaken by former RNZ editorial policy manager and communications consultant Colin Feslier, reviewed content and all complaints made to RNZ since the attack by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups on October 7 2023 and the subsequent Israel military actions in Gaza and other areas. Overall, the assessment found RNZ was acting within its own policy, the Media Council Principles and the standards administered by the Broadcasting Authority. It made recommendations to RNZ to further strengthen procedures and policies that build its reputation for accuracy, fairness and balance and allows it to do better than ‘not breaching standards’. Thank you Public Media Alliance for acknowledging 100 years of RNZ as part of #WorldRadioDay. This year, World Radio Day celebrates the many opportunities that radio broadcasting brings for giving prominence to climate change issues. In their acknowledgement, Public Media Alliance explore the vital role radio transmission has in emergencies. "In 2023, when Cyclone Gabrielle struck New Zealand, radio transmission proved vital in a vast region that was cut off from internet and electricity. Much of the east of the North Island was isolated by flooding and landslides, and it took days for power to be restored. During that time, locals turned to AM radio." RNZ is a statutory lifeline utility in civil defence emergencies and we are proud to have been providing vital lifesaving information in emergencies both here in Aotearoa and across the Pacific for the past 100 years. #WRD25 #PublicMedia #PublicBroadcasting #Radio

RNZ has appointed distinguished journalist and editor Andrew Holden to the role of Complaints Custodian where he will oversee RNZ’s vitally important system for formal complaints, ensuring the maintenance of public trust and confidence in RNZ’s work. Holden brings with him more than 35 years’ experience in journalism, including five years as Editor of The Press in Christchurch (including the major earthquakes in 2010-11) and Editor-in-Chief of The Age in Melbourne. Reporting to RNZ’s Director of Editorial Quality and Training, Jane Patterson, Holden will work alongside her to lift and develop training and skills for RNZ’s journalists. This is not his first rodeo with RNZ, having been the regular media commentator on Nine to Noon for two years. Patterson said the role of Complaints Custodian was a crucial part of ensuring RNZ kept to the high standards of both its editorial policy and formal complaints system, with Holden’s experience making him an ideal fit for the role. “Andrew has held senior roles in newsrooms both here and overseas where he’s been responsible for dealing with complaints in high pressure situations. He understands the need to respond quickly and fairly, but without rushing to judgement; important to addressing audience concerns and boosting the quality of RNZ’s performance. “This role is crucial to the relationship between RNZ and its audience and I am thrilled to have someone with such deep experience and journalistic knowledge join our team.” www.rnz.co.nz/media/243
