RNZ is partnering with Dalet to replace its internal editorial systems, improving efficiency and freeing up RNZ's kaimahi to spend more time on what really matters - the story. Chief News Officer Mark Stevens said the replacement was long overdue. “One of the existing systems we’ve been using in RNZ dates back to 1999. That might not seem that old, but in 1999 the biggest selling phone was the Nokia, it was also the year Google hired its first employee. “RNZ kaimahi have performed admirably with these outdated tools and have come up with creative workarounds where they can, but we owe it to our story tellers to make the technical side easier and allow them to focus on what matters for our audience.” You can read more about RNZ's $4.5m investment as part of its overall strategy for digital transformation here: https://lnkd.in/gQjUZ3Kn

How media approach AI technologies is rightfully an ongoing topic of interest, and we want to share how RNZ is approaching this emerging technology by publishing our AI Principles. RNZ audiences need to be able to trust that our storytelling is robust, credible and transparent and that whenever we consider trying new things we do so in a way that upholds trust and is consistent with RNZ’s Charter. The six principles outline RNZ’s approach to AI, our general policy that we do not publish or broadcast work created by generative AI, the oversight that we use in any application of AI and our policy of full transparency with our audience. You can read the full principles on our Editorial Standards page, alongside our Editorial Policy and our Social Media Policy here: https://lnkd.in/dztBvpAX #AI, #Publicmedia

We are pleased to be working more closely than ever with our public media neighbours the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). A new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) allows for a productive and meaningful working relationship that will serve audiences both domestically and across the Pacific. RNZ Chief Executive and Editor in Chief Paul Thompson said the new partnership builds on the existing relationship: "We have so much in common with the ABC in terms of our shared opportunities and challenges as public media organisations, and this MOU allows us to learn from each other, to share content and even to consider how we might work together on co-productions.” You can read more about the MOU here: https://lnkd.in/gbY_D8qv #publicmedia

Te Reo Irirangi o Te Hiku o Te Ika (Te Hiku Media) Radio New Zealand (RNZ) and Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision have entered into a new collaboration to further develop bilingual transcription and speech recognition for te reo Māori and New Zealand English. In a first for the public media organisation, RNZ has agreed to supply archival radio broadcasts to the iwi-led charitable trust to support its groundbreaking natural language processing tools. Ngā Taonga, the audiovisual archive of Aotearoa, which cares for the RNZ archive, is providing support to ensure the recordings are cared for and handled appropriately. The coverage of the tangihanga of Kiingi Tuheitia and the whakawahinga of Kuini Nga wai hono i te po was a real team effort. With three live radio shows from Tuurangawaewae Marae, as well as the recording of the Mata podcast, and being part of the media collaboration for the video broadcast, RNZ worked alongside other media to bring insight into one of the biggest events in Te Ao Māori. RNZ’s live blog generated almost 30,000 page views, the livestream was watched 119,000 times and content across our social media platforms generated 1.3 million views on a single day. Thank you to all of those who travelled to Ngāruawahia and those that provided support from afar.

Take a bow Nick Tipping who has reached the impressive milestone of 400 episodes of jazz programme Inside Out. We think one frequent listener of Inside Out summed it up nicely: "Tena koe, Nick, Congratulations on the ongoing enjoyment your Inside Out selections bring to Saturday evening listening. It is more than that, it is a weekly highlight on the station. The program often surprises and never disappoints. You have given Jazz its rightful place in the musical pantheon. Bravo!" Inside Out - 5-7pm Saturday on RNZ Concert, and 11pm-12am Sunday on RNZ National. You can also listen to past programmes here: https://lnkd.in/gJrkqVVa

Piki mai kake mai Janay Harding! Janay (Waikato, Tainui) has joined RNZ's rangatahi platform TAHI, as the new podcast co-host. Janay will be familiar to many of you, she's a mixed martial arts athlete and has appeared on The Traitors NZ, and although more used to being on the other side of the mic she's up for the challenge of asking the questions, confessing that she loves to talk. "I'm a yapper...might as well make that my job," Janay says. You can read more about Janay and TAHI here: https://lnkd.in/ghYDzwcf

RNZ today released new audience data that shows overall audiences are higher than ever before with 77% of New Zealanders 18-plus accessing its content a month. * RNZ Chief Executive and Editor in Chief Paul Thompson said its strategy of delivering outstanding public media that matters to audiences wherever they are was working. “Two decades ago, RNZ reached around 20% of adult New Zealanders through two radio stations. Since then, we’ve introduced a website, the RNZ apps, online audio players and a podcast section among other changes. We’ve increased our content on social media and started sharing our content with other media, meaning there are now more than 65 different places where you can potentially access RNZ’s content. We are truly a multiplatform media organisation, reaching more New Zealanders than ever before.” Rnz.co.nz has been a major contributor to the growth. Visitors to the website have risen more than 60% to a record 1.4m in July. Thompson acknowledged that while overall reach continued to grow, the picture for radio was more challenging. “While live radio numbers obviously only reflect a portion of our total audience, it is an area that we want do better in, and we will be looking at ways we can improve. We are introducing a new line up for Saturday Morning this weekend and will look to see what other changes could be beneficial." You can read the full release here: https://lnkd.in/gewvNbbP *Verian (formerly Kantar Public) Value Indices survey was conducted between 13 August and 22 August 2024, with a sample of 2000 New Zealanders aged 18 or over.
