Exciting news for Tauranga residents and visitors! 🌟 We're delighted to announce the opening of the new waterfront boardwalk and connecting railway underpass at the southern end of the waterfront in our city centre! This fantastic new pathway enhances our community’s connection to the breathtaking Te Awanui Tauranga Harbour. Not only does this project make it easier for residents and visitors to navigate between the waterfront, Tunks Reserve, and Elizabeth Street, but it also provides a dedicated shared pathway for pedestrians and cyclists right alongside the harbour’s edge. 🚴️👣 The opening of the boardwalk and railway underpass is part of the exciting transformation of our city centre, alongside the recently reopened, upgraded Masonic Park. Let’s embrace this new chapter for Tauranga and enjoy all the benefits it brings!

We’re building a new playground on the Tauranga Waterfront for our whole community to enjoy. The playground is one of many exciting projects happening along our waterfront to help our city centre become an even greater place for people to live, work, visit, learn and play. It will be ready in time for Christmas so set for summer fun. As part of the engagement process for the playground, staff engaged with students from Tauranga Special School, Bethlehem School and Greerton Village School to hear what the kids wanted to see in a playground, and their creative ideas that would help bring it to life. Some of the collated feedback, has been captured in the playground’s design, delighting the kids who proudly contributed and they can’t wait to explore the new waterfront playground. Boasting an impressive 8-metre-tall waka tower structure, the playground will offer a variety of ways to access this structure, from the elevated pathway with connecting bridges to rope climbing for kids that love a bit more adventure. Kids will be able to enjoy the stunning view of the moana from the waka tower and try and spot the local marine life from this vantage point. There will also be plenty of shade from the beautiful Bay of Plenty sun during the bright summer months, and rock walls, mega swings, and monkey bars to wrangle. Elements of Māori culture are also woven into the playground design including: Matariki celestial seat designs; and etching of the Matariki star constellation on the elevated pathway, amongst the milky way stars. Scheduled for completion this summer, the new playground will be a central feature along Te Awanui Tauranga Harbour and will highlight the deep connection between the community and its natural surroundings. We hope you are as excited as we are to see the playground open in December!

Bring in 200 trucks filled with 1,000 cubic metres of concrete to Te Maunga Wastewater Treatment Plant for an overnight pour, and what do you get? The foundation of a brand-new wastewater clarifier. Our wastewater treatment plants clean enough water to fill about 11 Olympic-sized swimming pools every day, using a four-step, chemical-free process. A key part of this is the clarifier, which removes solids to ensure the water is crystal clear. With two clarifiers currently in operation at Te Maunga, we’re building a third to maintain full capacity, even during maintenance. Since the concrete pour, precast panel walls have been installed, and we’re on track to complete the project by April 2025. This 40-metre-wide, up to 6-metres-deep structure will ensure the efficiency and reliability of the plant for years to come.
