Happy International Day for Volunteer Managers! A shout out to: ❤️ All managers of volunteers. Without your back room (therefore often less visible) mahi there would be far less volunteering in our communities (and it would be far less coordinated and effective) ❤️ The matchmakers at the Community Comms Collective who connect communications professionals with the charities seeking pro bono support (list of names below). ❤️ Volunteer champions like Volunteering New Zealand | Tūao Aotearoa and the volunteer centres. Shout out to the team at Volunteer Wellington for putting on an inspiring breakfast event this morning celebrating volunteer managers and visioning a positive future for volunteers and communities! 🙌 ❤️ Funders of volunteers. While the labour is free, it does require supporting infrastructure. The more we invest in volunteering, the bigger will be the payoff to our people, places and planet. Thanks to the team at JacksonStone & Partners for their long term support for the Community Comms Collective! Thanks to the volunteer managers at the collective: Hamish Girvan Lynne Le Gros Stephanie Gray Gail Marshall Louise Lum Penny Elliot Margaret McLachlan Emily Turner Asher Wilson-Goldman Sue McCabe. Hope you have a super special day! #IMVDay2024

Helps people who do good do GREAT 🚀 Charity Coach, Facilitator & Speaker 🎯 No-nonsense nonprofit insights💥 WARNING: may contain humour 🤣
Working for a charity is the perfect storm for burnout. • Your values are aligned with your work, so you care more. • You get a kick out of helping others, so it’s hard to say No. • You’re so busy helping everyone fulfil their hopes and dreams you forget your own. • You think everything needs a purpose. Why relax when you can send that email that might just change the world? • Informal working, infrequent support, low resources, poor boundaries, lack of clarity, mahoosive challenges, etc, etc. You got into this to change the world, but some days you’re too busy to change your socks! I get it. I’ve burned out twice and it’s common for many of the charity folk I coach. 8 things that worked for me and can help you beat burnout and get back to enjoying your job: - Recognise your red flags. Checking email at bedtime. Feeling you’ve no choice but to work late. Dropping exercise. No time for family or friends. - Recognise that not everything is in your control. Change what is and let go of what’s not. - Say no. Talk to your boss and team about their expectations. Be ruthless about not attending pointless meetings or events. - Make time for yourself. Prioritise sleep, diet, exercise, social time and family time the way you’d prioritise deadlines. - Break free from any sources of stress or anxiety. Use screen time limits, switch emails off after work, etc. - Work with your colleagues to prioritise well-being within your charity and put preventative measures in place for everyone. - Delegate more. The things you hold onto are opportunities for colleagues to grow and learn. - Treat breaks like meetings. Get them in your diary and treat them as a priority. Above all, remember you’re not your job and your job isn’t you. Separate the two, rediscover the real you and you’ll find it easier to weather the storm. PS: if this is helpful, repost for your network or save for later.

Check out the latest Philanthropy New Zealand magazine for all things social impact, including an article by our CE Katie Bruce. She talks about how social impact 'can be slippery because demonstrating it is not accessible to all. You can achieve impact without being able to measure it, but you can’t measure impact without tools to do so'. Katie also shares the advice given to the Social Investment Agency by a collective of community peak bodies. Contributors include: Jodi Hayward, Kate Frykberg, Nicola Nation, Alice Montague, Eleanor Cater, Leighton Evans. Read here: https://lnkd.in/g7s4ZswE

We love to share our knowledge and resources with volunteer-involving organisations like Bellyful New Zealand
One of the many highlights of our Bellyful National Hui was the range of speakers who inspired, challenged and invigorated us. Along with being treated to a powerful talk from the phenomenal Gemma McCaw, we had some incredible women address us. Thank you to Heidi Quinn (she/her) from Volunteering New Zealand | Tūao Aotearoa who gave us a great overview of the current state of the volunteer sector and a look at best practice guidelines (and plenty of giggles!) Lots of useful food for thought for us. We gained so much from Victoria Davy of Blind Low Vision NZ who offered some amazing wellbeing tools for how we can look after ourselves as leaders and avoid burning out. It really hit home. Christine Langdon 🌱🌎 Langdon from The Good Registry - gifting goodness spoke about being the change and shared her own inspiring story and the difference The Good Registry is making for charities like ours, and landfills, through its good gift-giving philosophy. And Liora Noy told us more about The Village, which is all about bringing whānau together to learn and connect and build a more resilient society. Thank you to these inspiring wāhine for giving up your time to uplift us! We all took a lot home with us from your words.

At conferences, IAVE members get to meet in person. Our 2026 gathering was a chance to connect in regional groups, walk through key takeaways from a members survey, and bring that feedback to the IAVE Board for their strategic planning. → https://buff.ly/3YfRQXn #WorldVolunteerConference
