  • What a dam day! A little drizzle ☔couldn’t ruin the parade of our sampling gurus, and for some enthusiastic year 13 students. So, what’s with all this commotion at the Waitakere Dam? Watercare Services Limited together with Watercare Laboratory Services, offers students tours of our Dams, an educational opportunity uncovering the complexities about water. 💧 Trust us, it goes deeper than the surface. 🙂↕️ The dynamic duo, Mitchell Adams and Fraser Halvorson 👷♂️ kicked off the tour with a hands-on filtration activity, which quickly escalated to answering some burning questions about career pathways in the industry. The team received some wide-eyed responses about we do at the lab. 🧪 With each drop of rain, the students dived deeper into the history of Waitakere Dam and its cruxes, 🛤️ led by the knowledgeable Headworks Operator, Chris Oord. A highlight of the tour, apart from the surrounding beauty, was standing beneath all THAT WATER! 💦 A secret tunnel that only operators know about…😎 Hopefully, we’ve inspired a future generation of scientists and engineers. ⚗️ Perhaps, we’ll see you in the lab someday. 👊 If you’re a keen student or would simply like to understand more about the dam tours, hit up Dan Organ (at dan.organ@water.co.nz) and register your interest. ✨

Drop those samples and put those chilly bins aside, and let’s give some loud congratulations to our sampling team leader, Ben Darlington, for hitting the 15-year mark at Watercare Laboratory Services. 🎊 Ben may be a menace to society, but behind the scenes he’s deeply rooted in water. 💧His career in the water industry has been in constant flow – began as a fresh-faced sampler, briefly hijacked our former Queenstown lab, before riding the current back to Auckland as a Water Quality Scientist for Watercare. 👨🔬 Our charm was too good to resist 😉, so he hippity hopped back to the lab as a team leader, and now effectively juggles sampling logistics, nurturing and training samplers, and BANTER. Don’t be fooled by his calm demeanour. Behind that quiet exterior is a devious mastermind, great teller of tales and maker of memes that will wreak havoc on Teams! Leave your desktop’s unlocked and you will be punished (consider this your official warning‼️). An obvious highlight of Ben’s role – the daily interactions and plot twists in drinking water sampling. When this ‘weapon’ is not winding up his co-workers, you will catch up him winding up road users on his bike. Our sampling expert’s love for water will always take second place as his family is far dearer. Mini escapades with his kids and dog add an extra splash of joy in his life. Jokes apart, the laboratory appreciates your hard work and dedication to your team. You’re not only an excellent problem solver for our samplers, but for our customers as well. Here’s to many more years of giggles and your terrorizing reign. #careers #milestones #sampling #drinkingwater #science #laboratorytesting #waterindustry #nz

  • If you're gearing up for the weekend, STOP! Before you check-out for the week, this is your reminder that LESS THAN 1 WEEK IS LEFT. If you haven’t been paying attention to recent updates by Water New Zealand, well this is your chance to hop on the bandwagon for new drinking water guidelines developed by SMART. We’re thrilled to announce that our very own Dr. Robyn Abernethy will be sharing her expertise, alongside other subject matter experts in this webinar. With her experience managing operations in sampling and sample reception, and now overseeing the laboratory’s quality systems, Robyn has a wealth of knowledge to share. The webinar will primarily focus on data transfer between entities, from sampling to the regulator - and where things can go wrong. But don’t worry, we won’t spill all the details here. While we know everything about water, we also embrace odour testing with open nostrils. 👃 What may be a sensitive topic to some, to our highly trained team of specialists, it is a passion. We’re proud to say that we’re the only IANZ-accredited odour laboratory in New Zealand. 🥇⭐ We put people’s noses to the test, literally. To ensure no odour goes undetected, we also offer testing with specialized instruments in the field. 🍃 Our team of experts are active through a wide range of sectors, from Wastewater Treatment Plants, where we identify the root of odour issues and establish effective control plans, to landfills where we implement effective odour mitigation strategies through comprehensive scouting. 🌬 We also help maintain the quality of drinking water with Threshold Odour Number measurements, making sure every sip is just right.🚰 Whatever the situation, we’ve got your back – and your nose! Our team is ready to dive into the science of scent and air quality, turning complex challenges into fresh solutions. Contact us today at labsales@water.co.nz or give us a call at 0800 522 365. How fast would you pack if you got an invite to paradise? 🏝️ For some of us, it was good as gold when they were invited to present at the Annual LabWare Customer Education Conference (CEC) in the stunning Gold Coast!🌞 The conference brings together IT gurus from across Asia Pacific and allows users to connect, share experiences, gain insights into latest industry trends, and find best practices related to their LabWare systems. Our two tech wizards, Sean Singh and Daniel Kim flew across the ditch to showcase some of our achievements and challenges in implementing LabWare Mobile for our sampling team. Quick recap: last year we launched field mobility (development phase); this year, we’re proud to present a fully completed app some standout features: - 🚫 Reduced paper usage by 95% (5000 pages per month) - ⏱️ Real-time data and result exceedance alerts. - ✅ Auto-validation of data within acceptable pre-determined limits (previously required authorisation) - 🛜 Local mode – no connection, no problem! - 🗺️ Links to google maps – no more driving in circles. - 📍 QR code verification of sampling points to ensure our samplers are where they should be. As with all operations, we will strive to refine our processes and continue to find better ways to make our sampling services flow like water. 💦 Haere rā to good ol’ paper and ink. You will not be missed. Before we sign out for the week, Watercare Laboratory Services would like to acknowledge the hard work of our ✨ samplers, and also Robyn Abernethy, Darren Cadman, Ben Darlington, Rosemary Sim, Tim Richards & Kelsey Oxenham ✨ – we couldn’t have completed this project without you! 🙌 #LabWareCEC #LabWareMobile #LaboratoryInformatics #waterindustry #nz #sampling #laboratorytesting

Unlocking insights from water quality data depends on the integrity of data itself. Getting this right, requires co-operation of multiple stakeholders; Samplers, Laboratories, Drinking Water Suppliers, and Regulators. Soon to be released guidelines from the Water New Zealand Smart Water Infrastructure group (SIG) (https://lnkd.in/gp7VmN3g) provide a framework to ensure data is consistent, traceable, replicable, and defensible and meets requirements of the Taumata Arowai Drinking Water Quality Assurance Rules. Join Andy Gaul of Connexis , as he hosts subject matter experts Quentin Griffiths of Lutra, Mark Homenuke of WaterOutlook, Robyn Abernethy of Watercare Services Limited and Noah Hensley of Taumata Arowai, discussing where things can go wrong, as well as how to fix them.
