About us

Whitireia and WelTec have been strategic partners since 2012, delivering a range of career choices and vast opportunities for staff, faculty, and students. Now we’re one of New Zealand’s most impressive, globally competitive tertiary institutions. WelTec The Wellington Institute of Technology is a tertiary institution that trains around 8000 students every year. We offer a range of industry-led qualifications from trades through to degrees and postgraduate programmes that are future-focused, developed alongside industry and provide students with practical skills so you can pursue your career goals. WelTec is one of New Zealand's oldest tertiary education institutions and the second-oldest in Wellington. We’ve been helping people find their vocation since 1904. Whitireia Established in 1986, Whitireia is a government-owned and funded tertiary institute of technology, known for its high student success rates and culturally diverse student body. Every year we train over 6,200 students (over 3,440 are full-time students) who study at one of our contemporary campuses in Porirua, Wellington, and Auckland. We offer a range programmes of study at certificate, diploma, degree, postgraduate and Master’s levels. Our programmes have been developed in conjunction with industry to offer excellent applied qualifications. Our NZQA Highly Confident rating for educational performance and capability in self-assessment makes Whitireia a Category 1 institution. Whitireia is named after the Whitireia maunga (mountain) of Titahi Bay – the mountain that Ngāti Toa identify with, the highest mountain in their rohe.

    Halo Olgeta! It's Papua Niugini Tok Pisin Wik - Papua New Guinea Pidgin Language Week 🇵🇬 Did you know Papua New Guinea has over 850 languages? The most of any country in the world. ‘Lukautim, strongim na kirapim tokples na pasin blo tubuna - Preserve, revitalise and promote our language and culture’ 🗣️ is the theme for this year under the overarching theme of "sustainability" among all Pacific language weeks🏝️.     Sophie always had a passion for hair from a young age so after completing a gateway programme and being given the opportunity to gain work experience at a local salon, Sophie was set on making hair her career. Tanirau's passion for hairdressing led her into enrolling at Whitireia and WelTec where she was awarded a Māori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTT) scholarship. Whilst studying the one year Level 3 Hairdressing programme at Whitirieia and WelTec, one of Sophie's most memorable moments was styling the hair ofthe models in the World of Wearable Arts show. “It was so cool to our see our work on stage, and we got to see how the modelling worked. I was a bit nervous going into it, but everyone around us—the models, production crew and other WOW staff—they had all been through the backstage stuff before, so they were pretty prepared and surprisingly relaxed.” Now, Sophie is loving work as a full-time apprentice hairdresser at Balliage Hair Salon in Wellington’s busy CBD and says "to anyone interested in studying Hairdressing with Whitireia and WelTec, Sophie says “Definitely look into it! It’s a full-time intensive course that gives you a solid idea of work in the industry.
