Building the @Future Green City: A New Collaboration Between IFME International Federation of Municipal Engineering and World Urban Parks We are pleased to announce the Utrecht Commitment, jointly agreed upon by the International Federation of Municipal Engineering (IFME) and World Urban Parks (WUP), during the Future Green City World Congress 2024 in #Utrecht, The Netherlands. This collaboration, borne out of our joint hosting of the congress, underscores the vital role municipal engineers and public works professionals, and urban parks managers and practitioners, play in shaping cities that are sustainable, resilient, biodiverse and vibrant. We recognise that tackling today’s urban challenges requires bridging the expertise of engineering, public works, parks and environmental professionals. A special thanks to Koninklijke Vereniging Stadswerk Nederland for their invaluable role in organising the congress and uniting public works and green professionals. Together, we are committed to promoting nature-based solutions, advocating for green infrastructure policies, and mentoring the next generation of professionals. The Utrecht Commitment is a call to action to foster collaboration, integrate sustainable practices in daily work, and ensure cities that prioritise human well-being and environmental health. We are proud to take this forward and encourage others to join us on this journey toward building the Future Green City. #Sustainability #UrbanDevelopment #GreenInfrastructure #FutureGreenCity #IFME #WorldUrbanParks #Collaboration #ClimateResilience #MunicipalEngineering

Yesterday at the Future Green City World Congress After a day full of activities at the Beatrix Theater, we wrapped up in the heart of historic Utrecht. At the iconic Mariaplaats and Pandhof Sinte Marie, attendees enjoyed a charming food court, delicious street food, and live music from around the world. The evening was made extra special by the beautiful cloister gardens of the former Mariakerk, lovingly maintained by the residents of Utrecht. It was the perfect setting to relax, connect with inspiring people, and share ideas about the green city of the future. Curious to see more? Looking back at day 3 of the Future Green City World Congress We had another inspiring day at the Future Green City World Congress! In the morning, Siew Leng Fun took us through her keynote speech, highlighting three interconnected strategies—at the level of islands, neighborhoods, and buildings—that have transformed the city into a web of green spaces. Ben Wilson then guided us through the history of nature in cities, from the Stone Age to the present. He painted a fascinating vision of the future city, where plants, urban farms, and forests play a central role in the urban landscape. In the afternoon, Lilli Lička shared her experiences from Vienna, where greening measures and the transformation of street spaces are tackled together with residents to make the city more sustainable and livable. Adriaan Geuze then took us on a journey through iconic public spaces like Central Park and Park Guëll, showing us how these places tell stories about our identity and culture. Anthony-Paul (AP) Diaz, Esq. inspired us with his vision of safe and welcoming parks, emphasizing the importance of collaborating with residents to make public spaces accessible and inviting. The day also featured inspiring XL workshops, urban trails, serious games, science labs, and classrooms. The involvement and ideas of all participants contributed to a successful day. Thank you to everyone who joined us, and keep an eye on our social media channels for more updates! WUP and the Chinese Association of Parks met during the Future Green City World Congress in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The leadership of both organizations had the opportunity to share for more than three hours about what each organization is doing, their plans, and opportunities for collaboration. At WUP, we celebrate this meeting, motivated by the opportunity to work closely with China and its parks and recreation professionals. Thank you to President Liu, to Kevin Zhang, and to the entire Chinese delegation. We learned a lot from you, and we are confident that this is the beginning of a very prosperous relationship for both organizations. Jayne Miller Tim Geyer Mark Bowater Luis Romahn

Good things take time and a lot of hard work... More than five years ago, World Urban Parks began conversations with Koninklijke Vereniging Stadswerk Nederland, driven by the idea of collaborating to organize an event that would promote better cities for all through parks. Over two years ago, WUP made the first visit to further the dialogue and agreements. During that visit, not only did Maarten Loeffen, CEO of Stadswerk, welcome us, but we also met one of the event’s key partners, IFME International Federation of Municipal Engineering through its Vice President, Sanne Hieltjes. A year later, we returned to the Netherlands with our Chair, Jayne Miller, to continue promoting and working on this joint effort. Tomorrow, after years of dedication and the efforts of many people, we will celebrate in beautiful Utrecht, a gathering of professionals, friends, and advocates for better cities for all. All this work is done because we care about our planet and our communities. It’s time to celebrate and congratulate everyone who made this possible—participants, organizers, sponsors, public officials, and politicians. Dank u Future Green City World Congress
