"We hope to take the business to the overseas community and see it go mainstream. I’d love to see it sold in all the shops like a regular Kiwi beverage. You know, you can just pop out and get some ‘otai," shares Bachelor of Commerce student Siaosi (George) Lavelua about his family’s business, Lav’s ‘otai. 🍉 ‘Otai is a traditional Tongan drink made from blended fresh fruit and grated coconut, cherished for its refreshing taste. As the longest-serving ‘otai stall in Tāmaki Makaurau, George’s family business holds a special place in the community. And as a first-year student, George relishes the opportunity to balance his studies with hands-on experience – while remaining deeply connected to his cultural roots. "When we put our ‘otai out into the world, we hope it might inspire other families to start their own businesses too", he adds, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. 📚 Learn more about George and his entrepreneurial journey:

“The biggest thing is just sparking the conversation and initiating a mindset of financial literacy and talking about money,” says Adam Wong-Toi, CEO of charitable trust SavY, which provides financial literacy workshops for high school students. In a world where the cost-of-living crisis and financial scams are daily realities, financial literacy is more crucial than ever. For over 15 years, SavY has been equipping students across Aotearoa with the knowledge they need to navigate these challenges. SavY’s peer-led workshops, guided by the motto “For Youth, By Youth,” make financial education relatable and engaging. From understanding tax rates to avoiding scams, SavY’s interactive approach ensures students leave school better prepared to manage their finances and future. Can sustainable tourism actually work? Aotearoa New Zealand’s tourism industry is committed to sustainability. But despite best intentions, most firms lack the resources or capabilities to implement environmental and social governance standards – beyond efficiency. Tune in to “Ready, Steady, Learn” with Claire Beach, a PhD candidate at the Business School, as she unveils her research on Aotearoa’s sustainable tourism practices. Claire’s research aims to help firms shift from sustaining the tourism industry to making tourism more sustainable.
