As bears prepare for hibernation, it's not survival of the fittest, but survival of the fattest! 🐻 The National Park Service's annual Fat Bear Week tournament spotlights the brown bears of Katmai National Park in Alaska. From June to September, brown bears feast on salmon to bulk up for hibernation. The more weight they put on, the more likely they are to survive the winter. Fat bears are also important from a climate perspective. Their main food source is salmon, a keystone species that is indicative of healthy ecosystems. Healthy ecosystems are critical for climate adaptation, and they also provide benefits for carbon sequestration. 🏆 Swipe to see the winner of Fat Bear Week 2024! But the U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts that with continuing emissions trends, the cost of participating in the Federal Crop Insurance Program could increase by an average of 22%. The upcoming Farm Bill provides an opportunity to improve federal crop insurance and help farmers adapt to climate change.
