Imagine taking a ride without a specific destination in mind. While it might seem adventurous as you get the chance to go to places you have never been, it can lead to waste of time and aimless journey. Recently, various "quiet" concepts have emerged, such as quiet quitting and quiet vacationing. These describe employees who do the bare minimum while pretending to work. This behavior may stem from how they perceive their organizational role, often driven by a lack of recognition or feeling undervalued. In response, employers have adopted their own "quiet" concept: quiet firing. This involves employers engaging in subtle activities to encourage unwanted employees to leave the company instead of firing them directly. Some suggest that quiet firing is a reaction to employees engaging in quiet quitting. The coexistence of these two concepts within organizations can be alarming. Quiet firings can create an atmosphere of uncertainty and demotivation among employees, especially if they feel they are being mistreated without clear reasons. When personal biases, rather than objective criteria, drive quiet firing, it becomes even more problematic. Employers must address these trends proactively. They should clearly communicate their expectations to employees. Have you heard of 'Quiet vacationing'? It becomes a trend in 2021 where employees take time off while giving the impression of working. In reality, they are doing other things, such as traveling, relaxing at home, or doing other personal activities. This concept may seem like an answer to those who feel burned out or overwhelmed at work. It somehow gives time to recharge and regain productivity. However, while quiet vacationing may be favorable to some organizations that are open to flexible arrangements, this concept may actually hinder employees from fully recharging as they don’t completely unplug from work. It also blurs the boundaries between work and personal time, leading to violations of company policies on vacations (Kelly, 2024). Individuals who are on quiet vacation may miss deadlines, resulting in a backlog of tasks when they return. As employees, when you feel like you need time off from the routine to the fast-paced cycle in the company, be vocal about it. Talk to your immediate supervisors about your needs. When you are on leave, make sure to TOTALLY DISCONNECT or UNPLUG from any tasks and savor your moments of time off. In this way, you can help your mind divert its attention and relax. As managers, always learn to listen to both the spoken and unspoken needs of your people. Be sensitive to the needs of your team, as not everyone can communicate their needs. Sometimes, we have to take the initiative to give them time off and allow our people to have a work-life balance. You need it too, as much as they do. There is no greater enemy in the world than the one within. When doubt takes over, it prevents an individual from taking action and pursuing their dreams. It leads to paralysis by analysis as individuals tend to overthink and second-guess themselves. This thought pattern wastes time and kills dreams because one gets stuck with the thought and fails to move forward. Unlike failure from action, doubt leads to inaction. It means that no attempt is made, hence no learning occurs. This results in unfulfilled dreams. When you feel that doubt is slowly taking over your world, make an effort to shift your mindset. See everything as an opportunity to learn and grow. Breaking down seemingly large and overwhelming goals into manageable tasks can also help in taking action rather than inaction.
